Win XP pro help

Lemon law

A few days ago I bought a used Win XP Pro system for very little money. While I am familar with XP home--this is a new experience for me---but its a nice system sepron 64 bit 3000+ processor, 768 MB ram, sata2 HD, and the OS came preinstalled.---with OS COA and serial #
on side of case--but no system restore disk.

So I am now trying to get it to be the system I want it to be---and I am adding my stuff and getting old garbage off.

Huge problem number 1-----the system was infested with malware of every kind--from simple spyware all the way up to viruses and trojan--well over a thousand have been idenified and removed by AV and spyware programs I have added. ---so I am thinking about a clean install---but how do I do it without a restore disk?

You can't do a clean install with no legal software on hand. Some systems have the backup OS stored in a hidden partition. Have you looked for it? If there was a CD with OS for that system, the first owner probably kept it.

To dderolph---thats 64 bit processor---my ram is 768 MB. ---much better than my older 256 MB ram system running XP home.

To corkyg--thanks for reply---and no luck thus far finding any hidden partitions.--and I thought if you had a COA and serial # microsoft would replace
missing disks.---but don't know proseidure or original vendor of system.

Is there no clue from your purchase source? You should consider calling Microsoft and give them the COA and key ID #. A lot depends on if it was an OEM installation or a retail package owned by some other person.

Again thanks for prompt reply---just got the system off ebay and am seeing what I can find from the seller on the promised restore disk. But when you say call microsoft==they have a bunch of numbers--and I have no idea who to call --or even which division handles these questions---but on the bright side--I can go to the microsoft update site and get updates.
So the copy must be legit.--and my guess is its an OEM installation.

And I see I do owe dderolph--looking again at my original post showed I did type in 64 MB ram--its now edited to the correct 768MB.

If its an OEM, then MS will not support it (as in replace CD's) youll have to contact the OEM supplier.
Is the PC a Dell, Sony, Toshiba, etc? or a no name/custom built PC?

To TG2,

Still guessing a no name Oem install---but do have some joy as the original seller says they will send the restore disk they promised.

But now do have one good thing to say about malware---it allowed me to get a very good system cheap--as infested as the PC was, I am amazed it ran at all.
Now that the box score is now 2000+ bad guys gone and hopefully none to go, its quite a fast system now.

thanks all.
