Win XP Pro boot up takes a long time

I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. For some reason the computer pauses for a brief moment after I type in my user name and password. The hard drive light is not going crazy either which leads me to believe it should have no problem loading up my desktop quicker. It has never done this in the past. So when I type in my password, it immediately verifies it and it pops up my background image, but pauses before the rest of the desktop is loaded (like the desktop icons and task bar). NOTE: I am running an AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz with 512 mb DDR. Any ideas? (Also, if it makes a difference, I have not installed any windows updates yet)
