Has anybody tried it out?
Im getting tempted to, but my current install of XP pro is working really good.
How big of a problem is it for drivers?

you're thinking of the "new" version of XP 64bit.

Windows XP 64 bit has been out for a few years now, however it will only run on the Intel Itanium architecture. The newest version of XP 64 bit (just called SP2 I think) is beta and it will have support for the Itanium 2 as well as AMD's Opteron and Athlon64 CPUs.

What processor are you running synapse?
 
I have an Opteron on an SK8V.

Could I use the video and promise controller drivers that im using now? I thought about finding out the hard way, but I currently need the computer running and dont have time to experiment at the moment.

If I were you I would wait until the new version of xp 64 bit is released, I'm sure there will be better driver support after it's been out for a while too.

Sounds like beta testing an operating system is NOT FOR YOU. 😉
 
Nasty thing about dogfooding public OS Betas is generally most of the core system stability is already done. There are a few thousand people who have already done the self-host/self-toast testing on that.

Instead most public betas are focused on testing upgrade/migration issues, app/driver compatibility, and oem development of drivers and installations. The latter is what bites the worst - often OEMs aren't ready with fully-functional drivers until RTM or beyond.

If you're running only one machine I wouldn't recommend you take Beta OS bits. You might be lucky and find your installation is just fine - then again you might hit every branch on your fall through the unlucky tree and find that your critical applications or hardware just doesn't work.

Bottom-line is that you have to be prepared to FDISK the whole damn lot and start from scratch. If you're not prepared to do that - then don't install.

 
I have XP Pro Beta for the A64 and Server 2003 Beta for A64. Its really lacking drivers. I just posted AC'97 drivers for sound. ATI hasn't released video card drivers yet. So, unless you have Nvidia your out of luck for games. ATI's have to run in frame buffer mode max res 1024x768. Most nics are supported though.

heck you could allways do a dual boot and set up seperate oses on different partions or physical hard drives just to be able to play around with the Beta. That way you will still have your good copy of windows or whatever your using thats stable working 🙂
 
I'd just never mind it until it's been out for a while and has good support from IHV's.
Unless you feel the need for 4+ GB of RAM or something 🙂
