win XP log off troubleshoot

Hi,

having some problems logging off in my system. Once in a while, when I'm logged in and lock my machine (switch user), my roommate logs into his account.

No problems there, EXCEPT when he clicks "log off" instead of "switch user." Occasionally, it will begin logging off his account, but the welcome screen doesn't start up again. It just stays a black screen, with no response to keyboard/mouse.

any tips?
