i know sdram are slow these day, i want an answer. if i add 128 more from already 128 meg sdram and running win xp, is that enough bec. on the box of xp it require 128meg? give a link where i can explain to my friend that why i should add more ram beside runing games and application.

XP will do better with a total of 256Mb ram.... It struggles with 128.. esp while booting up... gl with the upgrade

256 is the bare min most of us would recommend. I say 512 at least.

Sure it will run on 128 MB, but it will be very slow. And that is assumming you dont want to run games or office or anything fancy.

I did a migration last year for a large company, they where initially using 128 Mb machines to run windows XP. After a slew of user complaints due to the SLOWNESS of it all, they made a large order of 256 MB dimm to add to all the other machines to speed things up.

It save me about an hour per machine setting up stuff.

suffice to say you want 512 MB if you plan to play games like warcraft 3, UT2k3, UII, etc.

256 mb will still feel slugish has well

caveat...some mobos are ltd to the amt/size/type ram they will accomodate..YMMV...with that out of the way
..I agree w/ Adul..512 runs sweet on XP

you are speaking english right?

translation 😛

some mobos are limited to the amountt/size/type ram they will accomodate

waht does YMMV mean anyways?

128 isn't enough 256 is good 512 is better 1 gig is overkill unless you have a need for it.

With only 128 megs of ram you will see your hard drive blinking a LOT due to swap file usage.

I'd got with 512 MB of PC133-SDRAM. I mean, it's cheap as heck and Windows XP WILL use it if your playing a newer game like UT 2003, Unreal II and Warcraft III.🙂

we have 4 laptops that are running Win XP Pro with 128 MB of RAM (Sony Vaios). They work okay for browsing the web or e-mail/office etc. the important thing is to make sure your not doing more than one thing at a time as you really only have enough RAM for the OS, the virus scanner, and one IE window before you start going into swap file usage.

if it's a desktop sdram is cheap, you should consider picking some more up so if nothing else you dont have to worry about it anymore...

My buddy got one of those Dell's deals with only 128mb of DDR. It was running pretty sluggish. Dropped in another 128mb it was like night and day.

Your Mileage May Vary..

if i add 128 more from already 128 meg sdram and running win xp, is that enough

256mb SDRAM on my wifes P4B runs rather nicely. I should have waited to get the DDR version, But the SDR works just fine and also runs even my apps/games well. Going from 128 to 256 WILL be like night and day different in WinXP (even WinME for the matter)

When I added 128mb to the existing 128mb of RAM for a total of 256mb, I had I noticed a considerable increase in performance. When I added 512 later everything was nice and fast. When I took out the two sticks of 128mb and put in another 512mb of RAM to make a total of 1Gb, there was hardly a considerable increase in performance. But having 1Gb made me feel confident that that slowdown 5 minutes ago wasn't due to lack of RAM. 😀

Just hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, click on performance tab and look at free physical memory, with 128mb it should be scary enough to convince upgrading.

u need more like 512

Take all the "Anything less than 512 is too little" posts with a grain of salt.

In reality WinXP doesn't have to use up a whole lot more RAM than Win2K, turn off a bunch of crap and you can get down to ~60 MB used when freshly booted.
256 should be just fine for any regular use such as browsing, playing a few games, etc.
Some newer games like more RAM, but considdering this box is using SDR SDRAM, Im assuming it ain't too new and won't be playing the newest games?
