win xp install hangs

I'm installing win xp pro and the installer just stops. I'm currently sitting here watching it sit on installing windows, installing start menu items. It's stuck at 19 mins to go. The text on the right of the screen changes occasionally but the progress bar just sits there. WTF? I'm so sick of windows. If this machine was for me I would stick with linux. It's been sitting there for more than half an hour now. Screw it I'm going to start over. Any ideas why it seems to forget what it was doing and just went to sleep?

I don't know what else would be helpful. I upgraded an old PII 400 Gateway for the kids.
 
Is the BIOS making the system go to sleep because it thinks it is inactive? Maybe turn off power saving functions in the BIOS.
