win xp home networking question

i built a new computer .... i used the same xp home disk as my old computer

now before you guys start telling me this is immoral and its stealing and its wrong.... i know and i FULLY INTEND TO FORMAT THE OLD COMPUTER AS SOON AS I CAN GET THE DATA OFF OF IT!!!! AND I HAVE NOT USED IT SINCE I BUILT THE NEW BOX!!

im going to install linux on the old computer but i need to transfer a bunch of stuff (about 30-40 gb) to the new box before i can format it

well my question is if i network the 2 boxes together will it invalidate my cd key? i dont want to have to buy an external hard drive just to transfer some files. if so could i change my key so i could do this? yes i know changing the key is also immoral and wrong and stealing .. but i will format it as soon as im done transfering!!! I DO NOT INTEND TO USE THE SAME XP DISK ON 2 BOXES!!

You could take the disk out of the old system and put it in the new system to trasfer the data.

I don't think there should be any issues with the cd key stuff. I haven't heard anything about those kinds of issues, but I don't look for information on it.

Remember to look at this thread

then i still have the same xp key talking to each other... IF it does invalidate the key then i dont see how putting the old drive in the new system would be any different than networking them

Putting them both in the same system almost makes you legal. 😉

It shouldn't be an issue.

<- trying oh so hard not to flame. 😛

lol i appreciate the restraint ... i assure you that im not trying to 'beat the system' .. i just want to transfer files and then i'll format like a good, law abiding citizen ... ive heard that it will invalidate your key if you network em or dual boot for that matter... honestly i dont want to buy an external HDD and i damn sure dont want to burn 40gb to a stack of cd's

Get a DVD burner. They're great for backups, and you should be backing up your data anyhow. 😉

There have been posters here that have activated one copy on two machines without issue. I'm guessing they were networked, but I don't know for sure.
