Is your drive formatted as NTFS? You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS.

OK, great.

Now, making folders private is only available for folders included in your user profile, like My Documents, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, Favorites and any other folder that appears under your user profile.

What you could do is move the folder under your user profile then you can make it private. Be careful when you do this. You don't want to start moving system folders.

NOTE: Your user profile folder is located in the Documents and Settings folder.

You can make it "private" the traditional way by editing the ACL of the folder. You will need to turn off Simple File Sharing. Open My Computer and click Tools and select Folder Options. Select the View tab and scroll down to the Advanced settings. In the list there should be something that says "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" (or something like that). Uncheck it. Now when you right click, the folder you want to make "private", and select properties, you should see a Security tab. In the Security, remove all access to that folder and grant Full Control to your account and Full Control to the SYSTEM account (in case the SYSTEM needs to access that directory). You can also grant additional access rights to others if you wish to do so (such as list, write, read, execute, etc.).

Simple File Sharing does the same thing as above, but it configures security on its own when you select "Make folder private".

Hi,

Simple file sharing ONLY in XP home I believe.

Better security requires purchasing XP Pro.

Simple as that I'm afraid :(

Good luck,

Windows XP Home Edition does, indeed, stick you with Simple File Sharing -- in the default implementation of the GUI. But you can manually edit ACLs from the command (CMD) line. You can also boot into the built-in admin account in Safe Mode and control folder and file security from the GUI. Works very much the same as the non-simple-file-sharing setup in Windows XP Pro.
