can i create a startup disk with win xp. on my other computer there is a error that won't let me start xp. i've tried to boot up using my cd but it didn't work. it says hal.dll is missing in windows\system32\. that happen when scandisk was still running and my computer just restarted for no reason. any help on this?

As to booting with the XP CD, you will need to go into the BIOS to select the CDROM as the first boot device in order to do this. Be sure to save your settings before restarting.
From there you should be able to select the recovery function. I don't know much about it's use but found quite a few good hints and fixes on this page. Scroll down a bit for some better answers. Good Luck!

yes i have done that but still nothing. i don't know why it wont boot from the cd. if i fdisk it will it also delete my partitions?

If you boot with a "regular" (like Win98) boot disk and do FDISK you can delete partitions. Remember though, you will lose your info/data if you do.

Have you looked/noticed if the light on the CD comes on like it is reading it when you try to boot to the CD? Do you have a CDRW installed; maybe try that instead. Also, have you gone into the BIOS to confirm that the CD is still listed as one of the IDE devices and detected by the BIOS?
