Win XP hard drive performance problems

Under Win 98, I had my hard drive scores pretty high (using tweaks like setting the HD as a server, etc) on both Sandra and PC mark. Under Win Xp they are about 25% less, and now that I've gone to the NTFS file system, they are about half (in Sandra, half compared to what it should be). Other than the ops system change, there were no other changes (and yes, DMA is set on). Any help adjusting my settings would be greatly appreciated.

What is the current UDMA transfer mode? 1-2-3-4-5? I'm not sure how to change it or check it on a AMD system, sorry.

Do you have the VIA 4-in-1 installed? Also the SP1 would help if you have an ATA/133 drive.

The UDMA can't be changed in WinXP. The setting to detected automatically by the OS.

The transfer mode appears to be 2 (and I don't know how to change it or what a better setting might be). Also, i have the most recent service pack and the Via drivers. This is a bit of a mystery (I should have gone with 2000-doe). -Rich
BTW, mem is Crucial 512 (two sticks) set to turbo (and good performance showing). My only problem seems to be the HD.

run a 'diskperf -N' from the cmd prompt, that'll help some (turns off the performance counters... UDMA mode 2 is the smae as UDMA33 or ultra33... this is a bit older as any newer driveis udma 100 or 133... a bit older drive should still be udma66, so it sound like you got the driver (or bios) in the wrong mode.

Guys, your comments on UDMA made me go back and check my bios settings on this. Sure enough, they were disabled. When enabled, I'm back to normal. Thanks for the help. -Rich
