I have the folder set on List view, so none of the big thumnail or filmstrip garbage is going on. Watching Task Manager's performance tab, I have plenty of available RAM but whenever I open the Digital Pictures folder my processor usage jumps to 100% and then Explorer crashes.

I have SP1 and all available updates from Microsoft's website installed. XP itself I installed fresh about a month ago. I have a 1GHz Celeron with 320MB of RAM and a 60GB 7200 RPM WD hard drive. My Digital Pictures folder has 2,018 files in, but only about 30 in the root of the folder. The rest are all grouped in subfolders.

My theory is that it's crashing because it's changing the icons of the files in the folder to a preview of the picture...is there any way to stop this? I have Adobe Photoshop 7 installed.

Try this. start windows explorer go to --- folder options --> view --> mark "Do not cache thumbnails".
