Win XP Conundru

So i recently built my first rig and while feeling particularly flush with pride about my accomplishment, i volunteered to help fix a friend's computer.

it's a dell xps 400 running a pentium 2.3ghz, 1 GB ram, and like an 80 GB hard drive.

the computer's problems were 2 fold.

First, it could not boot into winxp because it was missing the system32\config file.

Second, when i popped in the reinstall disc i could not reach the windows recovery console because it would bsod before it got to the "press enter to start windows setup screen"

the bsod was this:

stop:0x0000007e(0x0000005,0xf786b0bf,0xf7cb7208,0xf7cb6f08)

pci.sys-address f786b0bf base at f7864000, date stamp 3d7b855c

i though the winxp on the hard drive was corrupt. so i hooked up the hard drive to my new rig and did a clean install of windows on it. It worked, leading me to believe that maybe the ram was broken in the old computer, hence why it couldn't even do a clean install.

I stuck the ram from the broken xps into one of my old dells. it booted fine.

So here i am stuck with this issue. The xps still wouldn't boot even after i put a clean install onto the hard drive. it popped out the same error message.

Any Ideas? I've googled this but i couldn't find my situation replicated.

Thanks for the help

That stop error is related to a possible bios issue with XP. Download and install the latest motherboard bios from Dell. And try again.
