There's a few progs you can download to do this. These progs were originally meant to help those fools with the FCKGW product key switch to a new key prior to installing SP1 on XP. I'm sure its legal if all you want to do is check your ID. That said, I'm sure you know the types of sites where you can find this utility. ;)

You could search Google for a small prog ViewKeyXP that will give you the installed key.

Murpheeee,

Run Internet Explorer 6. Click on Help/ About Internet Explorer.

Right in plain sight you should see your Product ID number.

I don't think Murpheeee wants the product ID number. It's the installation "key" that he's looking for. You know, the one that gets lost and without it you can't reinstall Windows (or Office).

There is a nice utility called, appropriately enough, KeyFinder from Magical Jelly Beans which displays Windows and Office installation keys.

That's the program that I was going to suggest but couldn't think of the name yesterday  That program works great

Yes, it's pretty nice. And the author is adding some new functionality as he goes along.

As for the name... KeyFinder doesn't exactly strike me as being particularly memorable, however approriate it might be. But it's hard to forget Magical Jelly Beans Software! :D

Thank you SO MUCH! I'm about to upgrade my mobo/cpu/hd/ram and was afraid of having to reactivate WinXP because of the massive hardware change. So I went to look for my product key and couldn't find it. I was going nuts until I found this thread and your post! Thank you again!

Yeah, re-activation is dead easy -- even if you have to call Microsoft. But installing in the first place without a valid key -- now THAT is hard! ;)

I think Keyfinder is a nice little program, and the guy that wrote it is good folks, too.

That's the product ID number, not the installation key. It's nice to know, but it won't get the OS installed for you.
