I have a legit copy of Win XP Home with COA. I was building a computer for my friend and was trying to use his OS (WinME) but we kept getting corrupted files during installation. So we did a clean install of my unused WinXP and got it up and running and then did the activation thing...then we started getting those nasty corrupted file problems again. Found out he had a bad stick of Ram that was causing the problems...so we changed out the ram and did another clean install of his WinME...The question...how can I deactivate the unused WinXP now as it is no longer on his machine.

Thanks

You can't. When you try and activate the copy of WinXP again, it will tell you it's already been activated and that you will need to call microsoft activation. When you call them, just tell them you deleted the copy from the old computer or that you installed new parts in your computer. They will ask you what parts you installed, tell them cpu, motherboard, hard drive, ram, CD-ROM. Then they will give you a code to input which will activate the copy.

Instead of going through that crap, do a net search and find a file or info on how to de-activate activation.
