hi,
setting up 2003 server eval copy and have a question. i currently have dsl running though a linky wireless router to a few computers in the house. the linky has dhcp enabled. i want to install server in its own test environment and play with its dhcp, dns, and active directory, as well as access the inet through it, BUT w/o effecting my other computers. i don't want them to have to join the domain or get their ip addresses from it. suggestions on doing this?

thanks,
k

probaly out of luck. only thing I could think is put two nics in your pc and connect with a crossover to the 2003 server. Then they will be on different networks.

I prefer VMWare but that is basically because we're a VM shop and I get it free but MS VirtualPC is capable. VM's is going to work well for you. Just understand you will need more memory than you might have and you'll want your Virtual environment to be on a fairly beefy machine anyway, for all the hardware requirements. But if it is just to play then VM's is going to be a good choice, assuming the hardware requirements are met.VirtualPC is pretty straightforward as is VMWare workstation. I think MS's product is in the 45-50 dollar range but I am not sure of that. VMWare is going to be more expensive I'd guess. Depending on the number of installations you want to install you'll have to adjust hardware specs accordingly. I run 2K3 servers with 384MB and Linux distros with 256 typically. Or 256MB for Windows client pieces as well.
