I just installed Win ME over Win 98 first edition about 2 weeks ago and i get alot of crashes in programs like Photoshop, Surething Cdlabeler, and other stuff. The error is in KERNEL32.dll most of the time. WHAT IS THIS FILE FOR???? ANything related to Norton ANtivirus? Thanks for the help. Also, should i go with Windows 2000? i want a stable machine and use Photoshop and play Quake III. Thanks

If you have the choice either reload your machine with Win Me. If you are using an upgrd, you will be prompted for proof of eligiblity. At thias point put in Win 9x cdrom. You can boot with 98 boot disk (or any for that matter). Goto your cdrom and type "setup". But if you are looking for stable....Linux is the only way, espec Mandrake 7.2.

Kernel32.dll is the kernel of the OS. That file basically IS win98, which is why that's the one that crashes. Ususally you will get an error saying xxx.xxx has caused in invalid page fault in kernel32.dll. That means the xxx.xxx and kernel32.dll aren't getting along. It' doesn't ALWAYS mean that the kernel is buggy, just that maybe it does things a little differently than the old (Standard 98) kernel32.dll, and the xxx.xxx program doesn't understand what those differences are. xxx.xxx just goes along on it's happy merry little way until it tells kernel32.dll something that it doesn't like, then BOOM. The sign of a truely GOOD kernel is when it can deal with this WITHOUT crashing. That would be called a Linux kernel though 🙂

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, I don't know a whole lot about this.
