Win 98 System File Checker reports all files corrupt_What to do?

When I start system there is an error message that win.ini application could not initialize. Details refer to a page fault. Running Win98SE System File Checker, it starts reporting corrupt files as soon as it starts. I put in Win 98 disk to reload specific files but there were too many.
Problem began after I reloaded IE6 to fix slow Outlook Express problem (as per Microsoft database instructions Q271510). Is there a quick fix or should I spend the money and call Microsoft?

one thing you could do is reinstall windows 98. put in the win98 cd, and run setup... choose your install directory as the one you have now, and win98 setup should do an "upgrade" on your exisiting system. all your data will still be there, and all your settings will still be intact. the only thing different is that our win98 system is brought back to its original state. that should fix the file errors.

you should try to find out what is causing these file errors. maybe check for bad memory chips? i once had a p233 system that had a bad memory module and it kept corrupting the win98 kernel, which mean i had to do a reinstall of the OS every couple of months.
