Win 98 Desktop Icons Problem

I tried changing some of the icons on my win98 desktop and it worked fine, but when I went back into the properties screen to change them back, the area where the desktop icons are normally shown is blank. This now prohibits me from changing my icons. Any ideas?
 
I have a dual boot set up with 98 and XP. So i made a copy of the Windows xp "explorer" file and opened it in windows 98 to use the xp icons in 98. This worked fine, but then this problem came up that i described in my last message. Now the icons on my desktop look like windows files.
