Win 8 - Document not opened automatically

Hey guys, a friend of mine who is not very well versed in the ways of software asked me for help.

However he uses Windows 8 which I dont use except for that one time in VirtualBox to check if my Win8 key from MSDN is valid.

The problem my friend is having is that when documents are double clicked. It would start the correct associated application (like Word) but the document itself is not opened automatically in the application. This only happened since last week.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it ?
 
Does he have Office installed on the computer? If he does he can right click on the document then select the open with option and set the default to Office or whatever Office type program he uses.
 
What's the suffix on the office document in question?

I thought auto-opening of the old .doc/.ppt/.xls files had been disabled by Office 2007 or 2010 for security reason. (You have to open the application first, then File->Open or GlowyOrbOfDoom->Open.)

Because of macro viruses or something.
