win 8 and hardwire network

I've brought my dad's machine home for some upgrading, and it's both wired and wireless capable. I'd prefer to use the wire, but Win8 is looking for a username and password. I've not had this issue before; the modem goes to a router and the router does the authorization and it's just plug and go for whatever I plug in. I'm not sure what user and pw windows is looking for. Anyone got any insight into this? thanks as always zz03

It sounds like you are getting an authorization request from something other than the wired connection.

If you ignore it, can you get online? With the wired connection in, does your router show an active connection?

If you go to Network and Sharing Center, do you see the connection?

It seems OS logon problem rather than Router/Network one.

Did you asked your Father for his OS username and password?

have tried both the machine (windows) login/password and my own homegroup user/password to no avail. i do see the connection in network and sharing, or in the charm list screenside, but when i push the connect button, it trundles away and gives an error msg 651. have read all sorts of stuff about that one, just gives me a headache. Will a machine maintain both a wired and wireless connection simultaneously?
