Did you buy a 64 bit versin of win7?
You're doing a CLEAN install. You're going to be limited to what you bought for your new OS. You have to pick 32 or 64 bit when you buy.
Any "upgrade" from XP to Win7 must be a clean install. If you have a Win7 x64 Install DVD, you can install x64. Any "upgrade" from x32 to x64 (of any Windows OS) must be a clean install.

Long story short is he has to do a clean install no matter what. If he has a 64bit disk, use that. If he only has the 32bit disk, then he has to use that.
I upgraded from winXP 32 to win7 x64 no problem. I juts put in the 64-bit disc, and it checked for an old windows installation and installed win7 x64. (Clean Install)
