Is anyone else having problems installing the 8/13 security update for Windows 7? Its an "important" update KB2859537. It refuses to install on both of my machines. Tried downloading the Windows Update Automated Trouble shooter and it says it cannot fix this update problem. :\

It installed fine on mine apparently on the 15th.

You could try the Windows Update Readiness Tool and sfc /scannow, then try the update again.

I still see this update available through Windows Update when I click "check for updates." DO I just need to hide it or what?

I wonder if the Malicious Software Removal Tool is trained to hit known rootkits exploiting a vulnerability that a patch is about to resolve.

Of course "known rootkits" doesn't necessarily mean "all rootkits".

In the article that ViRGE posted, it strikes me as odd that someone would write a rootkit to show pop-ups (which presumably download more malicious software)... what's the point. It's already a poor use of a rootkit to show advertising but at least that's more understandable despite being an obvious giveaway ("Hmm, I don't remember seeing advertising on the front page of google before...").

Was given a laptop exhibiting this performance yesterday, updated malwarebyes and combofix in safe mode cleaned the infection and allowed the update to install.

It is, but there's only so much you can do about a rootkit from inside a compromised Windows installation. So it's not foolproof by any means.

In addition to rootkits if you had Avast or certain games installed at the time of the update they could have caused it to fail. Avast has fixed the problem though.

Since MS13-063 is a Windows Kernel update -- always problematic, reaching into the inner sanctum -- a lot of people have reported problems. The most frequently reported problems, with Avast and the games Rift, Final Fantasy, and Defiance, seem to be related to developers hooking into the kernel in unexpected ways. Those are more-manageable problems. If you're still having trouble running the Rift game after authentication, install the latest patch from Rift (available since Aug. 15). Avast has solved the problem with an update, but no word yet on small game developers.
