I was reading blogs somewhere about win 7 starter for my netbook i have been thinking about install it on netbook for some time but the blog tells me that the starter only let you open up to 3 applications, no wallpaper support and NOW I am shocked to find out it will not allow to watch video off the dvd drive.

I always watch video on my netbook all the times for my trips....

Billy Gates....why are you doing this to us netbook lovers????

Stater meant to be inexpensive for the low priced Netbooks.

You want more, pay more and upgrade.

You are poor and can not pay more.

There is a lot of freewares that can be installed and play DVDs.

What are you running now on your netbook? If you can watch videos on it, why "Starter?" Some netbook OEMs include DVD playing software in their bundle. (HP does for sure.)

Ibut the blog tells me that the starter only let you open up to 3 applications
According to the MS Windows Team Blog: Microsoft dropped that "feature" in Win7 Starter Edition:

http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/05/29/let-s-talk-about-windows-7-starter.aspx

"For the first time, we will be making Windows 7 Starter available worldwide on small notebook PCs. We are also going to enable Windows 7 Starter customers the ability to run as many applications simultaneously as they would like, instead of being constricted to the 3 application limit that the previous Starter editions included."

I like Media Player Classic Home Cinema. Free and seems to behave pretty darn well. Remember that another critical free program Virtual Clone CD is also available. This will allow DVD iso files to be played as if in a virtual DVD drive. This can come in handy for netbooks that don't have an internal DVD drive.

Corkyg - with 1GB memory I only have to open IE, PowerDVD, itunes, and one program for videophone client (for use with hearing impaired).

Rebatemonger - thanks for the link it is good to know that MS realized their mistake this time.

I have WIn7 basic on my netbook (came installed) and its fine. You can open as many apps as you need, and it does play media files. Since netbooks have no dvd drive, I dont care about playing dvd movies. Just rip them to files and load them on the netbook. As far as the bling wallpapers, dont need that either. A netbook keeps it simple, so does win 7 basic. If I wanted a power laptop Id get a power laptop.
