Win 7 network printer issue

We have a printer at work that is networked. My mac, and all the other macs in the department can see it. I have a Windows 7 laptop. It refuses to recognize the printer.

It is not a problem that the laptop does not have proper permissions to access the network. I can search and see just about every other printer in the department (around 30). However, my part of our department owns and is supposed to use this particular printer, and again Windows fails to find it.

I *am* using the direct IP address to connect to the printer. I have tried accessing the printer, via IP, both by assuming it is a network printer and by creating a local TCP/IP port. Neither works.

If I simply type the IP into Internet Explorer it opens a window that shows all the various aspects of the printer - Status, Jobs, Properties, etc. Yet somehow, despite the fact that IE can see the printer and get info about it, Win 7 refuses to access it or recognize it as a printer.

I believe it is possible to print by sharing through the macs - however, I'm am not allowed to do this for security reasons. Note that IE claims there is a certificate error with the printer, is it possible this would block Win 7 from accessing it?

Any help would be appreciated. Is there some process I can go through to manually force a connection, since my browser obviously can see it? I cannot get info on how the macs are connecting to it because they are using Bonjour, which gives you no specific info other than MAC address.

You should be adding it as a Local Printer and specifying a new Standard TCP/IP Port. After you specify the printer IP for the new TCP/IP Port, it should ask you what driver you want to use.

I've never seen a Windows 7 computer block access to a printer because the webserver on the printer presents an invalid certificate...your PC doesn't access the webserver to add the printer or print to the printer.

Do you get some specific error message?

Thanks for your help - I have been trying using the Local Printer method you specify. It gives me the following message:

Additional port information required

The device is not found on the network. Be sure that:

1. The device is turned on.
2. The network is connected.
3. The device is properly configured.
4. The address on the previous page is correct.

If you think the address is not correct, click Back... etc, etc ... If you think the address is correct, select the device type from the list below.

[I choose "Xerox Phasor" because that is what it is]

[It then asks me to chose a driver, I do so for the proper model, and it says it has finished the process and shows the printer icon in the printer list. But it is never actually communicating, it pops up an ! icon and never communicates. I don't think it is actually locating it.]

If you go to the Xerox website, you can download the drivers and it automatically asks you to specify the printer's IP location. I tried this, it installs the printer, but it still does not communicate. "Troubleshooting" does nothing, as usual, just tells you that it can't resolve the problem and to contact your network administrator.

Could it be a firewall issue? I've found another person in the department on Win 7 who can connect to the printer - but he is not an expert and used the local printer method, which worked for him. Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to set all the correct manual printer setting based on copying all the various things, such as port info, off of someone else's computer?

Well - I found a good work-around. Since it is a laptop, I've walked it directly to the printer and connected via USB. Success!

Still, one would think Win 7 could connect to a printer via network. If anyone has any trouble-shooting suggestions, I'd appreciate them.

Are you sure TCP/IP is an enabled protocol for printing? It could be that it only has AppleTalk enabled.

It really is very simple. Install the driver software for the Xerox printer, and it should automatically search the network and identify and install the printer on the laptop. If it can't find the printer automatically, it will ask you for connection information. Give it the IP address of the printer and you are done.

If this doesn't work, then Lifted may be correct that TCP/IP is not enabled for printing from the laptop.

Wait, or do you mean on the laptop? I'll find out how to enable it via google, if I can.

No, on the printer. Printers usually have all protocols enabled by default, but at some point somebody may have disabled everything but AppleTalk.
