Win 7 Desktop

I have certain shortcuts on the left side of my desktop in a particular order that I want to stay that way.
When I place a new item or shortcut on my desktop instead of just going to the next free space on the desktop, it populates in the middle of my organized shortcuts. How can I change this behavior?
TIA

If you right-click on the desktop and do 'new shortcut' then the shortcut should appear approximately where you right-clicked in the first place. The same normally applies if you drag and drop an icon on to the desktop (that it appears were you dropped it).

If you've got 'auto arrange' enabled on the desktop (right-click on the desktop, view > auto arrange icons), then they should be created one beneath the other starting from the top-left corner of the screen and filling up column-by-column.

I can't think of a scenario where the icons would appear elsewhere on the desktop.

I've never found a solution to this directly, but i've had this issue on xp as well. The only thing that might help, if they make them for win7 are programs to save your desktop icon positions and such to be easily restored for when they get auto arranged even though you have it off......

It's just something i've learned to live with and reshuffle my icons around. Be interesting to see if anyone else has a solution.

Thanks. Auto arrange was turned on. I turned it off and it still puts them in the wrong place. I turned off Align to Grid also but it didn't help.

File-Save as-Desktop

That goes down the columns normally for me on Win7 pro. Did you maybe change the location of your desktop folder from the default?

The only time i've seen icons "insert" themselves into the standard columns of icons has been rarely when a new application is installed.

Are you sorting the desktop icons by name or date or anything?
Nope
