Comp USA has Win 2K Pro upgrade for 199.99-50 instant savings- 70 mail in upgrade rebate=79.99. I thought this was pretty decent.
Also I have a question. I recently purchased Win Me for my mother in law. I purchased it from Best Buy, now Comp USA has a deal on it were they give you a free 25 dollar gift card when you buy it. We have already opened the one from best buy, but no installed it. My question is can i buy the one from Comp USA and return that one to best buy using the reciept I got from best buy when I bought it there. Or will they know it's not the same one? LMK

mikef208,

I have a hard time understanding the 2000 upgrade.

I believe the version that they are selling is for users of NT 3.51 or NT 4.

Anywhere that I've seen it mentioned, the rebate is made clear that it's not for users of Win9x.

Also, the rebate is inside of the box and there is no way for my friend to find out what proof of purchase he needs from his current copy of NT 4 - a photocopy of cd, or...? He no longer has the box.

Is there a difference between the upgrade for NT and Win9x (besides the price)?

Perhaps others can un-muddy the waters for people as muddy as myself!

I think you need to own NT before you can get one of those rebates. I dont think that there are different versions of the software (one for NT upgrade and one for 98 upgrade). Nevertheless, this is an excellant deal.

M$ is going to get strict on their liscensing policies soon, so this may be the last NT incarnation before they open up a can of red-tape whuparse on anyone putting the OS on multiple home commercials.

We most likely had to pay for win9x at one thyme or another, but we can't use the win2k upgrade because we don't have NT? GatesBalmer is such a penny pincher. And they wonder why people pirate their software when Linux, Be, etc. are all free.

"and proof of being a licensed Microsoft user"

That's the catch phrase...
what proof are they requiring???

I saw the Win2k upgrade for a lot cheaper with those small on-line vendors. You may not get the retail box with it but the CD-ROM is a legit copy.

For proof of WinNT, you need either the box side, or the title page of the manual. So if he has the manual, he's set.

Okay heres the deal guys. I was just posting what i thought was a hot deal. Apparently its only hot if you have NT. My question is i just bought Win ME from best buy, but now Comp usa has a deal on it. I already opened the one from BB, so can I by the one from Comp usa and then return the unopened comp usa one to best buy, or will they know that it is no the one that I originally purchased from them.

Question..

I have the NT 4.0 manual/disk... but I am not using them. I am using Win98. Will the 2000 upgrade "upgrade" my win98 system? Or will it only work with upgrading NT?

Window 2K Pro Full OEM (no free support, but legit) here.

Cheapest I've found for those that don't have a prior NT version to either send in for rebate, or have the Upgrade version check on the HDD before loading.
