Win 2k install problems

I have tried and tried to install Win2k on a FAT32 partition (dual boot with win98,1st Ed.). I have also tried clean install, with no dual boot (but never with NTFS, always FAT32, so it will see my win98 programs easier (I am a newbie to Win2k)) I can get to the install screen where it asks to enable Smartdrive (never could do that either, could be my problem). I always copy the i386 folder to the hard drive (to make it go smoother and faster) My problem is, I always get a timeout message, and the computer locks up. Could anyone please help? Or at least give me links to follow to get my problem resolved. If I can't resolve it, i MAY have to go WinME route, and I don't want to right now.

Thanks,

How are you installing win2k. Boot disk or from Windows98?

I found that just running the install program from windows98 itself was pretty darned easy.

And about NTFS and Fat32. If you run your Win2k OS on a NTFS drive, it will be able to see anything it wants on the Fat32 partition. Windows 98, however, will not be able to see anything on NTFS. I run Windows 2000 on its own NTFS partition because I have tried both and Windows seems to like it better on NTFS.

I don't know what the timeout message is since I've never had a single problem installing Windows2k. If you were doing it from a boot disk though, give through 98 a shot with the installation. Just be sure to pick the right partition.

Doh!

It sounds as though you're installing win2k from DOS since you don't have SmartDrv enabled (I'm assuming you're installing win2k by starting the "winnt" located within the i386 folder). Well, regardless of how you're installing win2k, it appears to be a driver conflict. Make sure all your hardware is compatible with win2k. Just start the installation with only a video card (detach everything such as the printer, scanner, sound card, network card, etc.), then after the win2k installation completes, install other hardware with the latest drivers from the mfg.(drivers must support win2k).

It would be easier next time if you post your hardware configuration.

Sorry about that.

I have tried both installing from DOS, and installing from Win98. When Smartdrive is NOT enabled, is when the Win2k Pro reboots, and begins the install with the Blue screen (NOT blue screen of death).

Here is my hardware:

AMD K6-3 450
FIC VA-503+
128MB Mushkin RAM
WD 20.5 GB hard drive (also a 6.4GB WD)
Voodoo3 2k Video
Soundblaster Live! Value
Toshiba 32x CD-ROM
Memorex 2x2x16 CD-RW
CTX VL-5 15" Monitor
floppy
ZIP 100(parrallel)
MS Intellimouse Explorer (Intellieye)
Altec-Lansing ADA-305 speakers
Thrustmaster Formula T2 wheel and pedals
Win98 1st ed.

It's plenty cool, not overclocking, etc.

As for the NTFS/FAT32 thing, I want BOTH OSes to read from each other, that way I could interact no matter which OS I am using ;)

Thanks,

try pulling the sound card and then installing. I had a similar problem and that fixed it. just load the drivers and install sound card after w2k install.

Might be worth checking to see if there's a new BIOS available for your FIC mobo. I had a PA-2013 and tried at least two BIOS upgrades before finally giving up on Windows 2000, such was the instability.

Now I'm on a PIII with ASUS CUBX, no probs at all.
