Win 2000 or Win98 SE when building new?

HI
Still gathering info for building a new pc.
Which software would be best???
I have a full version of Win98 SE ready to go.
Would Win 2000 be a better and more stable platform???
Reason I ask,, I have read a few posts where peripherals used the same IRQ's and Win 2000 handled this better.
Since this is my first pc build project,, STABILITY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME!!! Since I am now using a Classic P166 and 80 meg ram,,, 99% of the games out there won't work on this machine. After I build new,, I will probably go for Microsoft Flight first and add to that as time goes on.
Has MS upgraded Win 2000 to accept more games???
Right now,,, 90% of my time on the pc is inernet related and home office related.
ALL HELP AND COMMENTS ARE NEEDED!!! 😀
Thanks

Why not install both and do a dual boot, then install games on whichever OS they run better on?? Just a thought, otherwise, Win2k is more stable, but if you set up Win98 just right, it can about match Win2k...If you set it up juuust right...And have a little luck...

I'd go both, just make sure you install Win 98SE 1st. I use 98 for games only and W2k for all other apps, which makes me feel comfortable. Win 98 turns out 3d benchmark scores much higher on my rig, so I suppose games still benefit from the drivers that go with 98.

If you do not have any game that will run under W2K, why bother with the W98SE. W2K is way more stable, but it costs more.

Dual boot it man.

it really easy install win98 then install win2k. not the other way around.

Unless you plan on playing some of your old dos games, then go with w2k. Most, if not all new games work fine. I have everything except my hard drives working on irq 9.

I'm duel booting right now with both win98 and 2000. I would have to say that, if you have the right hardware, 2000 is the best, but win98 also has its high points (such as the all-important win98 boot-disk with cd-rom support). In this case, again, if you have good hardware, go with win2k as a primary and dual-boot with win98 secondary.

HI
Thanks gor the help!

Now,,, another question.

How do I set the pc up to Dual Boot????

Thanks

win2k has a lot of games running on it now... so don't worry about games... most can run on win2k, if not, they will soon...

win2k is WAY more stable,,, my record on win98 is 1 week and 3 days (which was recently,, crashed today) and my record on win2k is 3 weeks flat (and that was due to a program error)

win2k is the way to go my friend... but i had a VERY hard time configuring win2k... so i deleted it .... heh... pissed me off so i kicked my computer and now it has a huge dent on the side...

Kicked the puter?????
LOLOLOLOLOL
About 2 years ago,,, I got miffed at mine as it locked up over and over and over. Finally out of anger and frustration,,, POW!!!!
I punched it straight on!!! Now,,, the duct tape on the front of the case holding the front cover over the DENT looks rather nice!!! LOLOL

I dual booted for a long time, but Win98 just never got used.

Any games run fine.

WinG games (Win3.11 gaming API), DirectX, OpenGL, Glide...any of them are fine.

Even DOS games run fine in Win2000 just without sound.

The only exceptions I know about is that some of the EA Sports games won't work right in Win2k...

Performance difference is minimal, just don't run games as Administrator..when you are logged on as Admin there are all kinds of system tools running that use resources that you don't need (or so I've been told) and I found that running on my regular User class account games in Win2k are as fast as Win98, or within a few percentage.

Stability is definately in Win2k's favour. For a regular PC win98 can be stable enough, but in most cases running for weeks at a time will bring win98 to it's knees.

Also consider this,

Microsoft is pushing Windows XP for home and business/pro users. XP = NT 5.1, 2000 = NT 5.0, they are the same basic core. New games and stuff that are optimzied for WinXP are also optimized for Win2000. And trust me you don't want WinXP.

You can dual boot for a while, I did and it certainly won't hurt anything but I think you'll find in the long run Win98SE is just wasting space and boot time.

I wouldn't bother with a dual boot system. You will find that Win98se is hardly used, if ever. Win2k runs almost all games fine with the exception of some EA sports stuff like someone else already said. I run Win2k and havent had any major problems and I like the OS a lot better than Win98se. My computer has been up for about 3 weeks and 2 days and it is running just as fast as it does from a fresh boot. The only time you really need to reboot Win2k is to update software drivers and any hardware upgrades. If stability is important and you want to go with a windows based OS, Win2k is the obvious choice. Your other options are freebsd or some *nix based platform, but I doubt you want to use one of those.

For all around usage now, I'd just go with the dual boot! it's simple to set up as mentioned, Win2K will do it all for you during setup. I do agree though, after a while 98 will become nearly useless! Almost all my kids' games run on 2K now (about 60 games) so I even loaded 2K on their system! 2K is much more efficient when it comes to memory, and if you have a fair amount (256mb or so) you will soon notice how much better 2K manages it! Like the guy above said, soon 2K will be the "norm" anyway with XP soon to be here, so make the switch now! Good Luck!🙂

True about the Ram.. I'd say 192 minimum for a happy experience, although right now I'm not chewing up too much. 118 with AOLIM, dvd decrypter and opera browser, explorer window as well. Cutting it close if it were only 128.

But, with memory prices these days, it should be a non-issue.

HI
A question about how much memory I am going to install.

I have 2 256 meg sticks of Crucial pc133 cas 2 ram for a total of 512 meg.
I am thinking of adding another stick of 256 meg for a total of 768 meg.
Remember, this is a work in progress and anything can change. Right now, it is a toss up betwen the ASUS A7V133 and the MSI Pro2a and MSI K7T Turbo boards.
I like the Asus because on some forums it was stated the documentation is great. I like the MSI because of the better raid. MSI has better stability. Asus has mre room around the cpu for a larger heatsink and better cooling. It goes on and on and on and on!!

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRHHHHHH!!!
LOLOL
Thanks

win2k, ms flight oughta be ok. some games don't work, like worms armageddon won't work, but other wise 2k is definitly worth it!!
