win 2000 install?

knutp

Senior member
Well im using win me now, but wants to try out win2k. Does it set it up as dual boot, or what do I have to do to keep winme intact?

Ok, just install 2000 and tell it that you want it to do a clean install, and not an upgrade. Should work out.

So it's just to start the setup program and then it will install it with some boot manager thing?

Yes, exactly. On word of caution, having two OS get's confusing if everything is on one partition. I would suggest using partition resizer to make a new partition for win2K. Partition resizer is a freeware program available at a few sites around the net just search for presizer.exe on yahoo or google. Hope this helps.

So what kind of partition then? ntfs or fat32? I installed partition magic now, and I should make a new partition for win2k? on my c drive (20,4 gb), or d drive(10,2)? and how big?

If your Primary partition is C:, use that partition. W2k will add the boot.ini to the mbr of that primary partition.
I would size it to at least 2.5 gb and format it NTFS. This will allow you to have mult.users and set various permissions levels and save desktop settings.
I have used both FAT32 and NTFS and have gone back to NTFS.
Your programs/applications should be installed to a seperate partition (FAT32) that can be shared with Millen. or W98.

W2k will go thru its install and quite a while after the install starts, will finally ask you where you want to install it. So don't get concerned.
Also if you have an IDE cdrw, pay attention and execute the F6 option when asked about SCSI devices, even if you don't have any. Then just continue when prompted for drivers.

You will be left with a boot menu that will allow you to choose which o/s to use.
To change the boot menu parameters (default partition, pause time), just edit the boot.ini file that will be located on C: as a hidden file. Use Wordpad to edit it and make changes.

We'll let's see. Do I have to remove 2.5 gb of the fat32 partition then, and just let it be there unallocated? and let the 2000 install find it? or should I do nothing and it removes some space in the fat32?

And I got both scsi cd-rom/dvd/cdrw and ide cdrw.

Edit: Im now defragging my c: drive, do I have to remove 2.5 gb of that drive before installing win2k? and make it ntfs or just nothing at all?

Im now in the middle of the install, so far so good. I created a 3 gb partition with partition magic (ntfs). Are there something special I have to do, that I might not do since I have no experience with win2k yet. I can not upgrade to the sp yet. And I know about the driver stuff (and via 4-1).

I wish you hadn't used ntfs. That partition now will not exist when you run Win98. But oh well. Everything should go well, installing 2K usually is pretty straight forward. One thing, don't be surprised when all your devices share the same IRQ. This is all part of ACPI, read about it if you like. Anyway, good luck and write back if you need help.

Well actually I don't mind that winme doesn't see the win2000 partition. Im so sick about all that drive letters. 1 dvd, 1 cd'rom and 2 cd'rw as well as 2 harddrives.

Well im using the win2k now. Some more questions. Will I be able to use the same folders and stuff for outlook express in both os's? and icq? that would be kind of important to get that working.

It didn't take long time to come on to the net either 🙂
