win 2000 clients unable to surf the web but able to ping everything

OK, here is my setup:
Wan connection
netgear router
win 2k advanced server
win 2000 pro clients

the netgear router is actually just plugged into the lan, so even if the win 2k server went down, the internet/mail is still accessable. here is the catch:

i can ping with any clients and the server to any ip or domain name (so dns is working properly). all clients are dhcp using the win 2k dhcp server, dns and wins are setup on the server.

what might cause my computers to not be able to surf the web? in explorer when i type in a web address, it says website found and waiting for reply, but no reply ever comes... thanks in advance!

The default gateway might be set to the server's IP address, try changing it so that it's the router's IP address.

Confused

the default gateway is set to the router's address... that would stop all wan traffic though, not just web requests... the problem i have is that i can ping everything properly by IP or by name.. so my router/subnet and dns configurations are correct.. i just do not know why it refuses to process web requests. thanks.

Clear your cache. Clear your history.

Make sure that you don't have a web proxy set up in your browser.

can you ftp into a ftp site from the window's CLI?
ftp ftp.idsoftware.com

If that works, then restore or reinstall IE

ok, cleared cache, cleared history, verified that no proxies are set (had that disabled as a group policy anyways). i've also tried using opera as well as explorer and both start to connect but timeout on the replies... i can still ping everything! #%*&*#@( computers.

Do a 'ipconfig /all' on the server and the workstations. Check your DNS event logs on the server for anything out of the ordinary, go into the properties for your DNS server (load the DNS mmc) and do a simple and recursive test under monitoring. Also, try to ftp to 207.250.14.6/ftp.cdrom.com both via name and IP. Post all results. Did you make any out of the ordinary changes to the Netgear router? Might want to try setting it back to the factory default, see if it works, and then 1 by 1 reimplementing any port blocks/forwards/etc.

This is an off the wall suggestion, but I've actually seen a problem like this w Surfboard cable modems where you hit the power button on them and they still have lights on but they're in sleep mode or whatever. If, on a billion to one chance, you have a Surfboard see how many lights you have on the front.

I hate things like this, it always ends up being something stupid.

Alright uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP
If it was just happening on one machine, maybe, but on all? I'd pass on this option.
