Win 10 Upgrade stuck at "Copying files 2%"

The rig in my sig is having trouble taking the Win 10 update. I use the Windows Media Tool and use the "Upgrade Now" option because Windows Update fails to run the upgrade properly.

So, the Media Tool downloads the install, I accept the terms, it downloads updates, then it restarts. This is where the issues start. First the spinning marbles go for a while (5+ minutes), then the screen goes black with a white cursor for another 5 minutes, then we get to the bullseye progress screen. After another five minutes the "Copying files" status gets to 2% and won't progress any further.

Now, there's nothing about my rig that should take hours moving files around. Anyone seen this elsewhere in the wild? I know of one other case here at At but I can't find anyone else with symptoms.

Use the MS media creation tool http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and make a bootable dvd then run it from within windows to upgrade in place and see if having the files on the disc helps you out. When I upgraded my tablet it took a little while to get the job done. Rolling back was much quicker lol.

I might have to give that a shot. It's been sitting stuck for well over an hour again. It isn't frozen as the bullseye ring continues to glow up and down.

Our laptop went relatively easily. Now if I could get these two desktops to work.

I can try pulling the power on the drives and trying.

I just tried a USB drive to upgrade. I had similar issues as this guy:

But I couldn't get it to ever do anything once it tells me to remove the media. It says to let the computer restart normally (which you have to do by closing the install program window) and it only performs a CHKDSK and reboots into Windows 7 again. :'(

I'm burning a DVD next. What a piece of junk install program. Microsoft, WTF can't I just install fresh and avoid your trash installer software?

What are the chances of contacting them and getting support (like it'd do anything) if I own an OEM copy?

If you want to install from a usb stick still dl the iso and then use rufus to create a bootable usb stick using that iso image.

I updated my old Vostro 1000 for grins... it stayed at 2% for a couple of hours and then boom- zipped right through the rest of the install. Only problem so far was the driver for the ATI 1150 express video. Had to use the legacy driver and install in vista compatibility mode. Now, all is well.

Hmm, interesting.

I ran it off the USB this time and it's still stuck. I'll let it go overnight and see what happens by morning. Though, I don't see why my rig would take as long as your Vostro.

The Vostro has plenty of memory and a SSD, so it's not really that slow. I think MS servers are getting hammered right now, so maybe it is a "get in line" kind of thing. I didn't create media, I did the update this computer...

I see, nice upgrade.

So, I left my rig running over night. It's now up to 6% copying files and 1% overall on the bullseye. At this rate it'll take a week to upgrade.

What're everyone's thoughts on why so slow? PCIe SSD incompatibility perhaps? I can image to a USB HDD if necessary and upgrade that, then image it back over.

I just don't know if it's worth forfeiting the over 16 hours it took it to get to 6%. What a cluster.

Mind = blown. Same as mine.

That settles it. Thanks for posting that up. When I get home I'm going to cancel the upgrade (if it hasn't finished), image a USB HDD, try upgrading it, then transfer the image to my PCIe SSD. We'll see if that works.

Edit: Once I knew our common thread, I found this. Same symptoms as they have with the Kingston HyperX, but I have a 480GB instead of 240GB.

Edit 2: A few takeaways from the thread.

A BIOS reset seems to help some users experiencing it (RAID seems to be another common thread, so leave them set to SATA until you're installed).

Kingston is aware and working the problem.

Some reported success installing to another drive, activating, then fresh installing to the Predator.

Some reported success buying a Win 10 license and doing a fresh install that way (avoids hardware change issues as well).

Thanks for sharing that thread over at overclock.net! Looks like Kingston is aware of the problem and will be pushing out a new firmware sooner rather than later...

Will stick with Windows 8.1 for now.

No problem. At least we're not alone. I'm going to try some imaging trickery to get mine to work tonight, or I might just buy a license so I can change hardware as I please.

Clean install works fine. I think I'm just going to buy a key and be done with this. I'd rather be hardware agnostic going forward with this build anyway.

I had this same issue on one of our machines, it would lock up after it had rebooted and was going through the 'installing files' step with the grey/blue pulsating circle. This was on a Z87 based rig. I think there are some hardware conflicts that occur during the install.

I updated the MB BIOS, disconnected the blu ray drive in that computer and reset BIOS to defaults. After this everything worked fine and I re-enabled OC settings and the blu-ray drive after Win 10 was up and running.

This is the route I ended up going. No worries about what hardware I ever change and the license stays with me. Hopefully Kingston gets a firmware release out there soon that fixes the issue. Even though I'm up and running, I'll probably still apply it.

Thank goodness! After my third attempt at upgrading and almost losing my mind I found this thread, I'm also using the HyperX and am having the same issues. Allright then, guess I'm staying sane for some yet!

The fresh installation method worked for me. I'm still eagerly awaiting the firmware update from Kingston. Maybe SR1 will help when it hits?

Yeah either I'll wait for that or just up and buy a license and be done with it. Only thing I wonder about is if there's some sort of upgrade deal when one already owns 8.1. They can't honestly charge full price for every iteration of Windows when you already own a license, can they?
