Anyone else get this? A Windows 10 (?) icon appeared all of a sudden in my system tray. After clicking on it it asked me if i wanted to be notified once Windows 10 is available for d/l (3 gigs). Curious if you guys got this too.

Haven't seen it either. I did notice a process called gwx.exe last week. Looking around it seems to stand for "get windows X".

Running Windows 8.1 64 bit on my Dell XPS 14 and just noticed an unusual Windows icon in the notification tray in the lower right.

Since I'm using a "Dude you got a Dell!", what's the best way to do a clean and fresh Windows 10 install when it's available?

You are likely getting that icon because you accepted certain Windows updates in the last month or two that are targeted at getting you to update to Windows 10 when it is available. I've seen a list of the KBs--there's 4 or 5 of them.

You can uninstall those updates if you find them annoying. Or ignore them.

I'd assume that continued inattention to the details of updates would not result in Win 10 being installed because at some point you'd still have to assent to a EULA.

yes i have this notification on my computer as well. I am forced to wonder why MS wants to give this OS for free. Its not like them to not want to make money. 😱

I just read that 10 won't be out til end of July, so why is this pop up appearing now as if this will happen soon? I hate to be needlessly hyped, lol. I am hyped though since I like new things...

Edit: I looked at the website and it says
"2. Relax You’ll get a notification when your upgrade is ready later this year. This lets you schedule the installation for a time that’s convenient."

Meh.

...but it is like them to save money. The faster everyone upgrades to W10, the sooner MS can leave W7/8.1 behind... 😵

At this point, I think I want to stick with Windows 7. Don't need no d**n notifications to upgrade and "Get Windows 10". Just more SPAM from Microsoft.

I got the notification.

Unfortunately the page doesn't display properly for me, but I hope I managed to reserve the upgrade.

Saw it on all three win 8.1 pc's and signed up for the upgrade. Two are pro so I hope that means that I'm getting the 10 pro x64 as well.

i ended the gwx.exe process only to have it come back after an hour or so later. nothing in msconfig either.

Hi,

I saw it last night on a win7 home premium.

1- What kind of info is requested and sent for registration? Email and product key (in my case win7)?

2- Having a laptop with win8.1 OEM with key in BIOS, how will it work it out? It can't rewrite the BIOS key for a win10 one, so after the year-free upgrade, what happens? The laptop recovery will put back win8.1, and no way to upgrade? What a mess of missing information!

3- I don't do upgrades. So it seems it will be a no-go for me ... not until more information arises ...

Thanks

Received mine sometime last night. Not sure I want it. Certainly don't appreciate the notification in my task tray as I certainly never asked for it. And it better not try to download the binaries automatically either. Up here we pay for bandwidth through the nose.

Nothing like seeing a random exe running under processes to make you pause and do some Google searching. Uninstall update KB3035583. Windows update will want to install it again. Hide the update at that point. I've seen less annoying aware.

I check Windows Update every other day or so -- I don't let Windows update automatically. I've noticed the last few days that Windows Update now has "Windows 10 is coming soon" with a button "Reserve" as the default. I still click on the "check for updates" and when that finishes it comes right back to "Windows 10 is coming soon". I click on "Show all available updates" and select from that what I want to update.

It seems M$ doesn't want the embarrassment that they had with Windows 8 as not many upgraded to it. Looks like they are trying to get people to upgrade even before they know if it's good or bad.

I don't think I'll jump on 10 -- I'll let the chuckle heads that signup for auto update work out the bugs first...
