it's whistle-blowingly good.

That's what I thought until it made me loose my diner the first time.D: The second and third times were both a close call too. While it smelled fantastic and was delicious going down, my stomach or liver simply did not approve. Maybe it just takes time to develop a tolerance for it. That said, I've never had an issue with JD or Jameson.

I've only had 18-year-aged Willett so far. Not sure which way to go from there.

18 years?! That's ancient in bourbon terms. I wonder how they can let it age so long...

I can't drink a lot of bourbon. A glass is good, but if I drink more than 2, it doesn't sit well on my stomach. It's the sweetness I think. It almost turns sour in my stomach or something; I dunno. I can drink scotch and Irish until I pass out, and wake up feeling great. With bourbon, anything more than a light buzz, I'll be visiting the toilet.

Yeah - that sounds familiar. It felt so good at first but I just sort of fvked me over in an unpleasant way.

As for the age of the poison: I thought the old age was a good thing - maybe they really did give me poison 😛

I'm no expert on bourbon, but they generally aren't aged as long as scotches. Since it's so hot in the south, they go through an accelerated aging process, and reach maturity faster than scotch and Irish does. The oldest I've had so far is 8 years.

In general, any whisky has a best age, and it isn't always the oldest. Some peak fairly young, and others can go a long time in the cask. Also, just because someone says /they/ think Macallan 25 is the best, it doesn't mean it is for you. It really comes down to personal taste. Italians like their whisky young, and a lot of distillers sell scotch in the 7 year range there, because that's what they prefer. Personally, I prefer middle aged scotch. 12-15 is my preferred age, with 18 years being at the very top of the range.
 
12-yr and 18-yr are common aging periods for bourbon, with 18-yr having become a popular "collectors" vintage in the last few years. But certainly, the average bourbon isn't aged nearly as long.
