Probably not that big a deal, but he was a big part of my life growing up in the D.C. suburbs. My parents were devoted fans of his radio show and I have personally tweaked his nose (as Bozo The Clown). And I I knew, but very few people believed me, he was the first Ronald McDonald, also. Then he really became famous as the weatherman on the Today show in 1980.

Stuff like this doesn't exist anymore, but he really was a very nice man.
