Will your IP Address change if you never shut off your router? MN 500

Situation:

Trying to help a friend connect to his home computer when he is not home.

Setup:
broadband--dsl modem--wireless router (MN 500)--wireless usb nic. His provider uses dynamic ip address.

Plan:
USe UltrVNC --assign static IP address to the wireless USB NIC---tell the router to forward port 5900 to IP Address.

My main probelm is the Dynamic Ip address--

will it change if the router is always on?
will it change if the computer is shut down? with the router on?

I was also thinking of remote desktop but I dont like the way it logs off the current user when someone connects to it

Well, the dynamic IP is something you gotta live with.
The second the router disconnects and then reconnects, you have a new IP. Even if the router is on, if it drops the connection due to a provider induced timeout (24Hrs max connect time for my provider), you also loose that IP.

Try using a Dynamic DNS service like http://www.dyndns.org . It's free and most routers have a configuration option to upload the latest dynamic IP to DYNDNS. All your friend has to do then to access his VNC is type in the server adress: friend.dyndns.org .

I use their service for accessig FTP and VNC services on my machine when I am at my parents or at a friends house and absolutely need a certain tool which I don't want to search for.

Unfortunately just leaving on your system and router is not going to work. DHCP servers have a time limit on how long it leases out an IP address. My ISP lets me keep the same IP address for 7 days before it changes.

You guys are right but some ISPs keep your IP address for a long time. For example, some companies will give you an IP address untill your router MAC changes which makes it seem very much like a Static IP system! I know because I get cable internet from one of these companies.

It depends on the ISP. I have roadrunner and have had the same IP address now for almost a year. Their lease period is 72 hours as well. Usually they force IP changes where I am once a year.

I use my Netgear Router in conjunction with DYNDNS.org to keep my DNS resolution working after they change IP addresses.

Many ISPs will force you to refresh every 1-7 days, but they also *generally* (not a hard and fast rule by any means) give you the same one when you refresh.

It's rare to find an ISP that *won't* provide you with a static IP (possibly for a fee) if you need one, though.

Also, the Networking forum usually answers questions like this faster and better. 🙂
