Until the virus actually mutates and begin infecting people, this is all just fear mongering, hell I survived SARS right in the middle of the problematic Toronto where it was such a big deal, and I'm pretty confident that at least Canada will handle it reasonably well, so frankly I'm not concerned.

I'm paranoid but this theory is a little on the doom and gloom side. I'm all for preparedness but don't go nuts. cough cough generator...

Fact is since the bird flu scare the profits of the company that has produced tamiflu has skyrocketed, and several members of the current administration have very close ties to them, especially Rumsfeld who was a chairman of theirs until 1997 and still owns a huge stake in the company.

coincidence?

Don't think so.

I'm going to put on my tree hugger hat and say that I am a little more concerned about consumption, pollution, and the general destruction of our environment. If we go too far down the hole, we are fsck'd. A little Bird flu may help solve the problem.

Fear mongering plain and simple. Unless everyone here has feathers. Yawn. 😛

It's not fear mongering. This is a world wide concern... you think governments like killing millions of chicken in their nation and pissing off the farmers and people just for fun? Yeah, it's 'safe' right now... because it's difficult to transmit to humans and it doesn't transmit from human to human. But if somebody with the normal flu picks up bird flu, and the bird flu mutates with the normal flu and becomes airborne, we would literally have hundreds of millions if not billions of deaths.

Saw a fascinating & disturbing Oprah special on this. The expert on the show suggested that to be prepared you might want to have the following things:

Do YOU have what it takes to survive?

No, and I don't care. And to be honest, that "expert" doesn't know any better then you or I how to survive a plague on that scale. How anyone can be an "expert" in regards to cataclysmic events that occur maybe once every few generations is beyond me.

This reeks of the same mentality associated with people who hear it is going to snow 2" and then they raid the store for milk and toilet paper because the weatherman told them a blizzard was coming. The bottom line is, even if the blizzard does come, do you really need to have 15 rolls of toilet paper because you won;t make it to the store for 3 days? NO!

Yeah, nice logic there... too bad you're using examples where people don't do that. I've lived in Canada for 30 years, been through tons of blizzard warnings, and i've NEVER seen anybody stock up on 15 rolls of toilet paper because they think there's going to be a blizzard.

And the expert knows more about it than you because they're obviously more educated. You don't need to go through a cataclysmic events to know exactly what's going to happen. It's called predictions, and it's based on logical assumptions. Will it turn out exactly as how it's predicted? Most likely not, but it's better than not having any idea.

You've got it backwards. Bird flu is unlike your regular influenza infection, it basically kills you by agitating your immune system to the point where your own immune system kills you. People with the *strongest* immune systems are the most vulnerable, the most likely to die. I.e., people between 20 and 40 years old. You fall into that category. Children, teenagers and old people have weaker immune responses, and hence are actually less likely to die from a bird flu infection.

You're a moron. You've obviously have no idea wtf you're talking about. Yeah, the Chinese, indian, and african nations that have been killing off millions of chickens have a huge stake in the pharmaceutical companies who are producing tamiflu.

Sounds like more media fear mongering. When the populace is terrified of something, they're easy to control. Remember when SARS destroyed the country? Me either. But that was suppose to happen too.

I'm pretty confident that I wouldn't die. In addition I live in a pretty sparsely populated area. If the sh|t hit the fan I'd load the car up with whatever food I could get my hands on and go live in the mountains with my inlaws.

Man, people are ignorant. This will NOT affect just the elderly and children. Look at all the deaths that have occurred, and they're with healthy adults. This isn't your normal flu dumbass.

that's like saying the people who warned about the weak levees in North Carolina were scare mongering. People knew those levees were weak, people knew they would eventually get a big hurricane, people knew the levees would eventually break.

Yeah, that's a great outlook on life. I'm assuming you don't bother heeding red lights or seat belts either, right? I mean, if you're gonna die, why bother taking any precaution... it's gonna happen eventually.

It happens here in New Hampshire (USA). Always, the day before a snowstorm the supermarkets and Walmarts and such are always mobbed with people. Pretty stupid if you ask me. But it does happen.

So people stock up on toilet paper because there's a blizzard? Milk and eggs i can see. If you're goign to be snowed in for a few days, it's good to have food that doesn't perish quite so easily. But toilet paper? I don't know, maybe you americans are just more stupid than canadians.

I will pray to God and live. all you aethiests will wait for a vaccine and die.

yeah, but that doesn't mean the threat isn't real. it just means assholes like Rumsfield use the knowledge and connections they gain in the job to feather their own nest. Which is despicable. Compare to Bill Clinton, who was essentially broke by the time he left office.
