will you sell your pennies for 10$?

how much spare change do you amass before exchanging it for dollars or depositing it?

i have a tupperware of loose change and i haven't rolled it and taken it to the bank in years.

rolling coins is such a pain that i normally i wait until it fills up. then after hours of work i get about 100$ from it.

are you more vigilant about your coin rolling than me? or do you not even deal in loose change?

I have a money machine that sorts it all out, and once in a while I'll roll it and bring to the bank but it's been a long time, in fact I don't even know if I did it since I moved here. The machine is stashed in my closet and I don't remember ever taking it out. I tend to use the change for coffee and such so I don't really accumulate a lot of it.

Since they don't make pennies anymore I decided to just keep those though. I doubt they'll ever be worth much but I like to keep stuff like that when they stop making it. I remember when they phased out the 2 dollar bills I thought to myself I should keep a bunch too but I was a kid so I spent them all on candy lol. They are not that expensive on ebay so if I really wanted to I could buy some but it's not the same if it's just a random one and not one I can say I've had since I was a kid.

The bank I used to take my change to would not accept rolled coins, and would dump my coin receptacle into their counting machine.
I don't accumulate that much change these days, when I know I'm likely to encounter panhandlers I'll put some in my pocket to give them.

I pay cash for almost everything, and I use coins as I get them, so ~$1 I guess.

I don't want to roll coins so I use the Coin Star machine and get gift certificates for businesses where I spend money anyway. No charge for counting and no rolling. My opinion of banks that charge to count coins hasn't changed since they started that crap: those banks can eat a bag of dicks. I usually take the change in when I have about a liter of coins. I don't put quarters in the jar as those still have enough value to carry around.

I don't go by dollar amount, just by when the bowl I throw my keys, change, and loose cash in gets full. It's usually about forty bucks worth or so.

What you really want to do for maximum impact is get a roll of fifty-cent pieces, stick it in the front of your trousers, then saunter up to the bank teller.

"is that 50 cents in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

I try to never deal in cash but on the rare occasions I am forced to if they give me coins I throw them on the ground in disgust.

Pennies are evil. If you're willing to thru many tens of thousands, there's a better chance of hitting the jackpot than the lottery. So I try to comb them out when I cash in my change.

It's really easy to check for old silver coins but they rarely show up any more.

BTW, if you haven't gone in years, there's a decent chance your bank won't take your rolled change. My cheapass bank put in one of those automated sorters that I think takes 10% off the top - like you're not already getting butt f'ed by fees. Anyway, you might want to call first.

I couldn't check any of the options because a) my memory is hyper selective so b) I never remember from one time to the next.

my fear is that the coin star machines short change the count.

how accurate are those machines?

There are a lot of coin sorting machines listed to buy off Amazon, might give one of those a shot when my big pot o coins fills up. For the $50-100 asking price on most units, it's absolutely worth it for the time savings alone. One jar's worth of coins will likely pay for the whole setup as well.

Shop at target and use the self check lanes. You can dump all kinds of change into the machine and it counts it for you.

Yup, been doing that a lot recently, as money is short (and _every_ till at the supermarket is self check out now). Been emptying my jars of accumulated 'shrapnel' (and anything found down the back of the sofa) into those machines (probably to the annoyance of those waiting in the queue).

Still, though, as coin denominations now go up to £2, "loose change" is not insignificant.

When my 44oz plastic Jack In the Box cup is full I hit the green Coin Star machine. Normally it is around $100. No fee to throw it on an Amazon card. The next time I order on Amazon it feels like it is free. :)

Why bank? Start using the coins to splurge on your favorite food. Think of it as bonus money you can afford to spend lavishly. That's what I always do with coins. Yeah, sometimes the cashiers can seem very annoyed. But most don't mind.
