Will you ever buy an iPhone?

No poll, just discussion. I am a big fan of consolidation, provided the tool can handle the multiple functions well. I'm currently using a Motorola Q and love it, but the iPhone looks far superior in terms of usability. I'll wait for revision 2 before seriously considering one though - let them get all the bugs out, add 3G, give AT&T time to improve the Cingular network, and so on. Will you ever pick one up?

No chance in hell.

I'm not a fan of cell-phones. I don't go out of my way to let people reach me wherever I am.

I still use a 4 year old Nokia, and it's all I need. It's lightweight and sturdy, and it has a lamp, which is much more useful to me than calendars and internet. I don't need my phone to be able to do 10,000 things and I don't like the touch screen. And if I want music, that's what my iPod's for.

No built-in GPS, which I think is just silly. Even Razr phones have built-in GPS.

wait, I guess point 2 would make it a no.

iirc AT&T has an exclusive 5-year contract for the iPhone, so it will be a LONG while before it gets to Verizon (if ever). The price is expensive but it's just like a new processor - it's really expensive when it's first released and then it drops in price. Technically the price is fair - $300 Smartphone, $300 iPod = $600. I don't know what they're thinking with a non-removable battery though...I'm sure that will kill it for a number of people.

I decided that the GPS issue wasn't a big deal for me...they are continually improving GPS technology, which is probably why Apple didn't go with it. Bluetooth GPS is fine and will most likely get better reception when placed on your dashboard than an iPhone would in your hand or on a vent mount. I'm betting that 3G will come in the next revision or two.

I think that it won't be too long before we see some third party apps that will utilize the GPS chip inside the phone. I am fairly certain that every cell phone made after a certain date (about a year ago) had to have a GPS chip inside for emergency services. However, it would then be up to the carriers, and the manufacturers to make that chip accessible for purposes of navigation.

They are trying to bill it as high end, but they stopped half way. Also 500-600 w/ a 2 year contract is way too much money for one of those, even if you take off the $250 value of the iPod, the iPhone itself doesn't seem worth the 250-350.

So I'll pass (I'd even pass if I were on AT&Ts network).

I would if I was with Cingular, the battery life is good considering how big the screen is, also I think the price is decent if you fact how much would an 8 gig mp3 player with a large screen costs. A 8 gig mp3 player with a micro crappy screen will be 150-200 bucks. Not having 3g sucks, but there will be 3rd party apps for it so maybe GPS isn't out of the question. Should be an interesting phone, the interface really looks slick. But No Verizon, no me, by the time Verizon gets if, if we ever do. There will be something better, or at least equal but much sooner. Maybe the LG Prada will come to Verizon.

While I won't commit to saying that I'll "never" buy an iPhone or iPhone successor, I won't purchase one in the next few years under ordinary circumstances. The only possibility of me getting one would be if my current phone breaks, and if it's possible to get the iPhone as an existing Cingular customer without purchasing a separate 2 year contract (Apple will be stupid to not allow this, but I doubt they will).

All you guys saying you're not getting it because you don't care about your cell phones are missing the point ;p

I have a crappy 3 year old nokia, i really don't care about my phone. But there are several things I've decided I would like to do portably. Access wireless networks (laptop?), listen to music (mp3 player), take decent pictures of what I see, and have a cell phone.

What I'm mostly excited about the iPhone is that it can access wireless networks (at least that's the impression I get) so you're not racking up huge cell phone bills getting on the internet. Because to me, a laptop is even too big to be as portable as I would like. The lack of GPS isn't quite as significant to me, because it has internet, if I can type where I'm at on google maps it's just an extra step I guess.

It's essentially everything I care about having with me. I'm with Cingular, and would probably get one, but I can't imagine it being a smooth transition and I can wait, but I am still excited about there finally being one unit that can do everything I want :D

Lack of 3g really kills it for me. I pay $25 a month for unlimited data minutes anywhere in my calling area. If I can access WiFi I'm probably somewhere I can use my laptop, and I'd much rather browse the web on a 14" screen than a 4" screen. Also for $600 8 gigs just isn't enough for me right now. For songs it would be suitable but they're billing this thing as a widescreen video iPod and 8 gigs isn't enough for $600.

The I'll consider getting an iPhone when it has support for cellular data networks, more storage (I'm thinking 32 gigs or so), and a CDMA variant. I don't like how restrictive Apple is being with it, but I imagine that it will be popular enough it will be completely hacked relatively quickly.

It would also be a plus if they changed the name..... I can't stand the "i" nomenclature.

not anytime soon. they are going to have to fix several things before i consider it. there are other alternatives for less or an equal amount of money that simply have more features. although this has always been the case with apple, i still won't consider an iPhone until there is a removable battery, GPS and 3G. i don't know what apple is thinking but all modern phones have 3G.

atleast it might be interesting cause apple is going to allow anyone to write apps for the iphone. will be kind of like widgets in opera.

I probably won't consider getting the iPhone until the second version is released. Also, I hope that there would be some kind of protection flip that is changeable for the screen.

Check out this animation

Looks like it has a built-in screen protector. I wonder how good it is and how long it will last...

I doubt I'll even consider buying an iPhone. Too expensive, for one thing. Apple stuff always seems too expensive. I don't think I've ever bought any of it, in fact. I'm PC all the way. I have iRiver iHP-1xx MP3 players, way more powerful and cheaper than iPod stuff. If I want portable MP3, that's what I use. I've had my current cell phone for 2.5 years and know of no reason to want another.

I really don't think it's Apple that's requiring a new contract sign-up in order to purchase. I rather think that Cingular was the one who threw that clause in, as it makes better business sense for them.

Definitely won't be getting the first gen. Maybe a later revision if it gets some new features or if the price drops.

I desperatly need a new phone and my contract is due for renewel w. Cingular anyway. I will consider an iPhone. I really want one but I know it might have some serious flaws, so I'm waiting for reviews and then I will see. I won't be on like on June 29th or anything.

And I think the touchscreen only is awesome. I'm sure it will take a week to get used to it but once I do I think I'll love it. I love how much extra real estate on the screen there is.

just read the specs on it, 8 hours of talk time!?! All the extra non phone crap it has is pretty nice. But I'd give my left testicle for a phone that has 8 hours of talk time. I hate having to recharge my phone so damn often.
