Didn't know there are discount supermarkets that sell expired food for big discount and it's legal to do so, expired dry grocery does look edible most of the time.

Absolutely. A considerable portion of my food is expired by the time I get around to eating it anyway.

There's a lot of food that lasts WAY beyond its sell-by date. You can eat thousands of things without a problem, but you only have to be wrong once. So no.

My local grocery store marks stuff down when it gets close to the pull date. I got several pounds of turkey lunch meats for a steep discount recently, took it home and threw it in the freezer. I saved an average of $3.00 to $4.00 a pound. None of it was expired. :)

Your old meat made me sick!

APU
Oh, I'm so sorry. (pulls out a bucket from under the counter) Please accept five pounds of frozen shrimp.

HOMER
(holds one up and sniffs it) This shrimp isn't frozen! And it smells funny!

APU
(brings out another bucket) Okay, ten pounds.

HOMER
Woohoo!

depends.... no, if it's any kind of dairy/meat product, but most likely if it's anything else. it's a "sell-by" date, not an "eat-by" date for most things.

depends on what the products are.

Dairy? no way.

Dry goods? sure.

fruits and veggies? case by case basis.

the article mentions someone talking about cereal for 99 cents or upto 1/2 off.

you can get fresh good cereal for 99 cents or 1/2 off just by buying sale items + double/tripled coupons you can clip from newspaper inserts

Frequently. When I'm at the grocery store, I always check the day old baked goods section. That's about the only time I'll buy things like a pre-baked pie or already baked cookies.

As long as you cook it to boiling point it will be ok. Like road kill. Just pop that dead my excellent compatriot in a pot of boiling water and you got nothing to worry about.

You are correct. But I think the pull of this kind of store is that everything is half price or significantly lower. In normal supermarkets, they have their loss leaders and their sales... then they hammer you on everything else. That equals out savings for the supermarket.

:)

I'd try old dairy & meat, but only after work on Friday. That gives me a solid 60 hrs to get it out of my system w/o the inconvenience of workplace diarrhea.

Those are sell by dates, not expiration dates. Many of them are phony. Many dry, canned and bottled goods can last years if stored properly, but those sell by dates are generaly a few days or a few week from when they hit store shelves. Used to be they were only on dairy products, meat, and fresh vegetables, and some prepaed foods such as potato chips, not canned or bottled goods. Now they appear on everything. They started putting them on those other products just a few years ago because they discovered that many consumers are dumb enough to throw out food after the stamped date and buy more, thereby increasing sales of those products. America is the land of waste.

It's legal because they are not expired, there is no laws limiting their shelf life - as if shelf life could be determined by law. That would be like politicians deciding it can only rain on tuesdays.
