I've heard alot of mixed thoughts about the art style of FF13. I had FF7-FF9 on my old PS1 and liked 'em (especially 8) and I played FF10 on my buddy's PS2 but missed out. Just wondering how many of you plan on playing it and whether it'll be a purchase or a rental?

And please, limit this to the "FF13 audience" (i.e. if you've never had any interest in the FF series don't join in just to say no).

I just got confirmation that I will be getting a review copy, and possibily a preview copy next month. My expectations are not that high for this game, but who knows--it might blow me away...right?

I am hoping it is better than what people are saying. 🙁
I actually really liked 12 and grew up on Final Fantasy from FF1 on NES, and especially enjoyed 3(6) and 7. The ones in between I couldn't get into, although 9 was ok.

Bah, I should have added an "I'll wait for reviews before making a decision" answer to the poll. Queasy, if you see this would you mind adding it? I can't edit my polls like I could on the old forum.

I took advantage of that Amazon deal but I think the last JRPG I really liked was Lost Odyssey. Before that? Maybe FFX? I dunno. To be honest, this game doesn't look that good in terms of gameplay to me but I'm buying it anyway.

Undecided but probably.

Part of me wants to play it and part of me wants to punch it in its emo face. Some of the gameplay I saw streamed looked kind of boring but the game is visually impressive.

I haven't played a FF game since FFX which I never finished (I think my save is just under 50 hours in)--although I never really played 7-9 either.

I understand the wanting to punch whiny characters, believe me. I've read in a few places that (almost) all the characters become genuinely likeable by the end of the game though, so I'm going to give it a shot.

If the reviews make it seem decent I'll get it, but when it's $30-40 not $60.

I can afford to wait since I still need to play X and XII, and those have to wait until I finish Persona 3 FES then play Persona 4.

I'll put it at the top of my gamefly queue once it's released, which should mean I should eventually see it 3-4 months later.

the last FF game I played was X and i hated it. I ahven't really liked FF since 8. not sure that i'll get this or not.

No. I have played much of the series and Final Fantasy VI is my favourite game ever, but XIII looks like crap from a gameplay perspective. Too many numbers flying around.

Not sure. I may at least give it a rental.

The good news is that it sounds like the experience will be nearly identical on the PS3 and 360 minus the disk switching/installing on the 360. 1Up did a comparison between the 360 and PS3 versions and said there was no discernible difference.

Well the thing is that these types of games are not as popular as they used to be. People want their games to be fast paced with lots of shooting hence why Fallout 3 sold well even though it was a horrible excuse for an RPG.

I'm kind of on the fence. I haven't really liked any of them since FF7, but I think it'll be interesting to see the first "fancy graphics" Final Fantasy.

Yes, the first half of the game is linear. You're also unable to backtrack. The world doesn't "open up" until well after. Something like chapter 10 out of 14 total chapters in the story and the last chapter locks you into linearity, again.
For me, gameplay and linearity don't factor as heavily. Last FF I sat down and really played through was X. The ability to explore or backtrack didn't help me then since I never did either until much later when I decided on a whim to get the Celestial weapons.

I've played all and only not beaten 5 and 8 so far (and am playing those currently to get them checked off the list). I have my release day pre-order in with Amazon.

Actually, that's my problem with FFXIII. It's appealing to the super fast high action junkies. The battle system is mostly just numbers flying around because it looks "cooler". Virtually every attack from both the enemy and player's party is multi hitting and the numbers flash very quickly and it's hard to keep track of it. This annoys me because it limits my ability to select the highest damaging moves. For example, which is higher damaging? 876+1020+927+1026+1109 or 1659+1876+1943? Shit like this happens in this game.

You'll have to figure it out in about 1 second. Not only that, but the numbers don't just flash fast, but also start lower and scroll up. So in total you have an inhuman amount of time to figure out what is happening. You cannot possibly approach the game from a strategic point of view. You just do the move you think is doing the most damage, but you cannot possibly know. I prefer a thinking man's RPG (oh, this attack is about 10% stronger against these types of enemies - I'll do that instead) compared to NUMBERS NUMBERS NUMBERS LOOK AT THE NUMBERS FLASHING SO FAST ISN'T THIS GAME COOOOL FOR YOU KIDS THAT ARE BORED BY RPGS? NUMBERS!!!!

It's embarrassing. I wouldn't want to be seen playing this piece of crap. I really value battle systems - since you spend hours in battle in each game - but apparently pretty graphics + numbers flying everywhere = better.
