Will you be buying the Original Original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD? (with poll)

The only trilogy sets I own are a fullscreen original version on VHS and a widescreen special edition on VHS. So I'll probably pick it up just to have the original widescreen.

Yes, because I refused to buy the Special Edition travesties.

Also, I wouldn't expect HD/BR to catch on quickly, if at all. For one thing, less than 10% of the TV's in use in the US are ATSC/HDTV, showing that consumers have been slow to adopt the new technology. Hi-Def is the future of course (I'm not disputing that), it's just that consumers aren't rushing to embrace it as quickly as some might hope. In the meantime, NTSC TV's can't even take full advantage of existing DVD's, much less HD-DVD or Blu-ray. The industry could attempt to push the new technology by phasing out existing DVD's, however, it faces too much competition from Video-on-demand and the soon-to-be-realized internet video download services, which are much more likely than HD/BR to become the future anyway.

In other words, don't buy Beta. 🙂

i purchased first release and like the changes...i think if they have a chance to better the movies more power to them...the only thing that bugged me is who shot first.....but i don't really care and won't be buying these just to get the more accurate one.

I was actually expecting them to do something with the attack on the second Death Star, especially in the name of continuity. Some scenes show large numbers of capital ships in the attack, others show maybe 4 or 5, notably when the fleet is jumping to hyperspace. That looked more like a small group leaving for a family reunion, rather than a battle-ready fleet of dangerous starships.

Maybe movie companies are going to start offering movie subscriptions, to get the latest versions as they're released. But I have a feeling that they'd still charge exactly the same amount, rather than offering some sort of "upgrade discount." Or if they would, it'd be 5% off or something pitiful like that.

I never "grew up" with the original movies. Hell, I saw Spaceballs before Star Wars - it didn't make much sense. The fact that I was not even 10 years old when I was Spaceballs might have had also something to do with me not getting the humor.

And I still don't get the big deal with who shot first. Greedo's still dead.

if this is just a rip from the laserdics, then it probably isn't any different than the laser disc rip i already have on dvd, right?

You know when you think of it, it's actually sort of bizarre that George Lucas continues to make billions selling basically the same movie 40 million times in different packaging. I probably will not buy the Original Original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD when it comes out. Im content with the Trilogy DVD's I have.

Wait, is it true that the original versions being released tomorrow are non-anamorphic widescreen?

CRAP! It is true. On disc one of each 2 disc set is the enhanced version and it's anamorphic.

On disc two is the original version and it's NON-ANAMORPHIC. (not enhanced for widescreen TVs)

See here if you're confused:

Anyhow, this is utter CRAP. Non-anamorphoc video looks like crap on a HDTV.

I will NOT be buying.

Yeah, that's the deal breaker for me too. Lucasfilm basically ripped these from their LaserDisc archives and threw them on DVDs with NO work whatsoever.

Yes, I purchased the first DVD release and will be buying this too.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to buy the Tin at Best Buy or not. Its going to be $59.99. Thats a little more than I wanted to spend for this non-anamorphic release, and I already have the 2004 versions. At least these will look better than my old pan and scan VHS set. I really don't mind them not cleaning them up or giving them 5.1 sound, etc... Although anamorphic release would have been great.

Well, you guys did want the originals right? If he toyed with them to make them better for new technology, wouldn't that be messing with his original work? If he offered two different versions, one the true original, and the other enhanced for anamorphic widescreen, would there still be complaints?
This is semi-sarcastic - I understand that there's not much point to putting out a movie in original format if the display technology is now very different from that of 25+ years ago. But that might not be enough for the true purists.

I'm sorry, but your post is absurd.

You can make an anamorphic transfer without monkeying with the content.

Interesting, I didn't know what anamorphic meant.

I just wish everything would unify to a single damn resolution. 720p, 1080p, whatever. Just frigging pick one! I hate all the stupid up/down conversion, transcoding, etc.

Had 2 of original 3 on Beta, then bought the VHS trilogy pack, and have some of the new ones on DVD

Think I will just wait for all 6 to come out in a set

not if you destroyed all the film you can't

Yep, because I held out on buying the first DVD boxset, this way I can get all the boxset versions PLUS the originals. I'll wait for the 3rd or 4th incarnation of Episodes I, II, and III to buy those 😛

I think an HD-DVD version of a 30 year old movie will just make the flaws in the picture more evident.

I wouldn't bother with the tin. It's just 3 regular DVD cases in a tin case, no additional content or anything. It's a difference of $10 if you bought the 3 individually at BB, or more if you bought them elsewhere.
