I'm betting on yes, but will an xp 1700 at 1.47 ghz take full effect of a radeon 9700 pro? Im pretty sure it will, if not 100% then 90 percent at least.. Plz help me out, considering buying one.

Well, I'm not as sure as you seem to be on this one. Take a look at Anandtechs own review of the Radeon 9700 Pro.

You'd probably be better off with a 9700 non-pro. There won't be much spped difference, and if you play games like Unreal Tournament 2003 on Unreal 2, then they're mostly CPU bound.
You could get the 9700 non=pro, and overclock your CPU and GFX card to get 9700 PRO performance anyway.

well even for unreal 2, the minimum is a p III 733..
so im sure a 1.5 GHz processor will run it just fine..
I think unreal 2 is more GFX card dependant

Not exactly sure what the question is, but if it is "will an XP1700 utilize 100% of a Radeon 9700 Pro's capability?", the answer is "no". In fact, I don't think any cpu to date has maxxed out the 9700 Pro. This doesn't mean that the 9700 Pro is not worth getting though, as some state regularly, it just means that in the future you can continue to expect increased performance from the 9700 Pro as you upgrade to faster cpus.

actually, Unreal 2 is heavily CPU dependant.

Currently almost every cpu available on the market cannot fully* take advantage of the R9700pro! I have the 1700+, and my best bet would be it would bottleneck the 9700pro, but it doesnt' mean it wouldn't play good!

if you read the readme it clearly says that you would benefit more from a video card upgrade then you would from a CPU upgrade, says the game is more heavily weighted against the video card..

NO, 90% no, depends on the resolution you run at too. Maybe 80% @1024x768 32 bit no FSAA/Anisio?
No real simple answer here other than it will go and go and go with more CPU speed.

The readme is written in general terms. What they mean is that, for example, going from a GeForce 2 to a GeForce 4 Radeon 9700 will have a much bigger effect than going from a 1 GHz CPU to a 2 GHz CPU on that same GF2.

However, this doesn't mean that the CPU isn't important, it's just the less important of the two. Nonetheless, going from an XP 1700+ (1.47 GHz) to, say an XP 2800+ (2.25 GHz) will have a huge benefit on framerates when both use a Radeon 9700.

And someone said earlier that an XP 1700+ will use 90-100% of the capabilites of a 9700. This is totally false for games like Unreal 2 when run at realistic resolutions (ie not 1600X1200, 4X AA, 16X AF). A faster CPU will help out a lot in Unreal 2, same as UT 2k3, etc. You need both a fast CPU and video card to run the newest games at high framerates.
