Will Work for CPU Cycles

Ever see those people on the side of the road holding signs that say, "Will work for food"? (Not to pick on them.. but)

Have any of you computer doods ever give the thought of trading "work for CPU cycles?"

Let's say a small job that you would normally make a few bucks on, but instead of monetary funds, ask the network admin or company owner to crunch WU's instead?

I've done a lot of work with local schools and with the amount of power they run idle all the time, I think I can really increase my (our) stats. I have a "hold harmless agreement" with them anyway so I would modify it a bit and resign the contract. 🙂

What do you think? Crazy? Let me know...

Good luck Rich,

As a German journalist said to me one night while interviewing me with his big accent, he said "I don't understand, we run Distributed Computing on all of our Schools and Institutions in this Country, how can it be a crime in your Country?".

Speaking of our Government whether it be a State or Federal level, there are millions of PC's, all left on 24/7 365 and most are not running Distributing Computing.

Yep, unfortunately, I'm another of the crazy ones! :Q 😛

I've done a couple small jobs for people who didn't have much in their budgets but wanted to compensate me properly - in those instances, it's worked okay for me, though I've had to specify a definite "pay-back period of time" for the computers to be running.. no open-end agreements thus far. 🙁

I only do this for side projects.. real money is still quite usable for things like food, mortgage, utilities, etc. 😉

I've been doing that for a while now. But computers is my hobby not my job so I don't depend on them for my main income

I have done this occasionally, but unfortunately this only works out if youre earning enough anyway... Not viable for me, the gaps in work are all too frequent.

Well I may actually start standing on the corner with a sign that says just that! 🙂 So that way if people get tired of tossing their spare change out the window, they can let me assimilate them! 😉 I have been working on my neighbors that get "free" tech support from me to do this. Problem is that they only have their computers on for a couple of hours a day, what the hell is wrong with them? LOL

ROFL, are you sure Rich? I always though real money was only usable for things like CPU's, Ram, Mobo's & other cracking material 😛

Actually, I run seti on nearly every customer PC I work on...it's part of my "validation" process, hehehe. I got a customer P4 2.0a system that's been running seti for 2 months, hehehehe. I told him to come pick it up over and over but he keeps waiting. Well, while he's waiting I'm running seti. 🙂

I do this as well. It's part of my "3 day" burn in test. I always keep new systems for 3 days after it's completly loaded to stress the system, and get 15 or so WU's out of it! HEHE.
