Will WinXP run faster on my SATA?

Hello all,

I just picked up a couple of Western Digital SATA 160GB 8MB Cache 7200RPM WD1600JD drives to day and i'm wondering if I will notice much operating difference if i run my OS on one of the new drives instead of my current Maxtor PATA 80GB 8MB Cache 7200RPM drive?

Thanks for any input!!!

Probably not at all, they have the same specs other than the WD's larger size. You can check out more information at Storage Review about these drives, since they are not native SATA, they are basically just an IDE drive using a chip to convert the data flow to SATA.

Don't they call that the placebo effect?

Just because the bus speed is faster doesn't make the drives any faster, they still have the same bottleneck of waiting for the heads to move and retrieve data. But how much faster could it make it, maybe 5 seconds? 10?

a little, but not because of the sata. i don't think any drives, let alone the one ur buying really maxes out pata yet. ur 80gb is old and slow, theres no comparing it to a new drive. after all, everytime they cram more onto a drive itbecomes faster(if its more density per platter). hd's spin at set speeds, so each rotation will read more data

Would a WD 740GD 74GB 10K RPM 5.2ms RAPTOR S-ATA make a noticible difference in gaming and such? or would it just be better benchmarks....

Thanks!

Thanks!

Benchmarks for sure, but also if you run any programs that require sequential transfers, or games with large maps such as the Battlefield series or UT2004.
