I was an early adopter of Windows XP, I bought an OEM copy of XP Home before it was available in a retail box.
Back then, before dual-core or even Intel's hyper-threading technology(which IIRC means the OS sees and uses 1 CPU as 2 virtual CPUs(aka virtual multi-processing)), I was told one of the only reasons to use XP Pro was if you had a multi-processor system.
The motherboard I was using that blew out on me was the Intel D865PERL, which was plagued with BIOS and compatibility issues and overall I was unhappy with the board. It did however support hyper-threading, and at one point I upgraded to a socket 478 P4 3.0 Prescott.
At that point, both my motherboard and my 3.0 Prescott were hyper-threading enabled. However, even when I enabled the option in my BIOS, my fully-updated copy of XP Home SP2 would only recognize 1 "CPU" in the performance tab of the Windows Task Manager. The same tab on my friend's systems with similar builds and XP Pro would see 2 CPUs.
My new system build is based on the ASUS P5K3 Deluxe motherboard, with a Core 2 Duo 3.0ghz 1333mhz FSB CPU, and 2GB(2x1) of Corsair XMS3 DHX 1600mhz CL 7-7-7-20 memory.
IMHO now would be a terrible time to buy either XP or Vista, due to the fact that both will be receiving service pack updates near the beginning of next year. I hate having to make a slipstream disk when I could just wait and get an official disk with the service pack pre-installed.
So, will a fully updated copy of XP Home SP2 recognize both cores on my new Core 2 Duo, or will my system be a one-legged build? My parts arrive tomorrow, and I'm trying to figure out if I should scramble to obtain an unused XP Pro license and a disk to go with it.🙁
