Will win98se APPS work if I make it D: and put XP on C:?

OK, I have a working win98se on C:. I bought a new drive, fdisked and formated it and want to now make it the master c: and the old win98se drive the slave d:.

My question is, if I install XP on the NEW C: drive, and setup dual boot, will the win98se apps work? I am worried that the apps will look for stuff on C: as they were installed, but the OS is now on D:.

Does the dual boot function resolve this by also swapping drive letters which would make the "current" OS booted C:?

TIA

well, here's what i would do

if you install XP, use the NTFS file system....then, when you boot up 98, it won't be able to see the NTFS partition and it will think that it's still the C drive

of course, it's not easy to install XP and then add 98 back into a boot loader, but if you can do it, you should be allright

Well, that may work. Actually, once the drive was formatted in fat32, I do not get the message asking me if I want NTFS...at least I do not remember it.

when installing xp, it should prompt where to install it and also whether you want to leave the existing file structure intact or not...

OK, so what you are saying is to put my win98 drive on D:, and the new drive on C:. Then install XP on C: as ntfs. Will the XP dualboot to win98 on D:?

hmm...i guess i'm getting a little confused

yeah, what you said is what i suggested, but i'm not sure if you're going to be able to add 98 after xp is installed already

ideally, you should just keep your old 98 as C and then install XP on d

can't you do that?

YES, I can do that, but IF I then decide to get rid of 98 and make XP my C: drive, I will not be able to do that. May not matter as I believe I need to keep WIN98SE around anyway for VPN issues.

well, i'm not sure what to tell ya!

re-installing both fresh, in the manner i mentioned, makes the most sense really

if you ever DO deside to get rid of 98, it isn't really the end of the world to re-install XP fresh again as C.

it'll just work out easier

but it's up to you, wish i had some more insight, but i'm out of ideas!

good luck

Hey there sohcrates, nice to see you back here. You have been missing for a while. have you been on holidays?
Anyhow... You can change the drive letter to C: from D: after you uninstall Win98. So your problem isn't a bad one. Then your other drive will be know as D: when and if you format it to be NTFS.
I agree with the way you are dual booting, I much prefer to dual boot from two seperate drives rather than from one drive with a partition. You tend to have a lower failure rate when it is done like that (I have found).
