My 80 gig hard drive is only 2 years old and it is acting strange. I ran a test on it this morning with the lifeguard tools and it said "error code 0257 please contact tech support. "

Do you think they will replace it if i have no reciept?

I dont want to sit on the phone for who knows how long with tech support if they aren't going to take it back.

Thanks for any help.

Typically the warranty is attached to the drive and not a paper reciept. By this I mean that the warranty starts the minute WD puts the label on the drive and NOT when you buy it. My guess is that yes, WD will repair/replace your HD - my main concerns would be how long will it take...

You may even be able to check your warranty status and request an RMA online; pull the S/N from the drive casing and check it out at WD's website. I can check the warranty status online for all my Maxtor drives.

You don't need a receipt to return HD's. Go to WD's website and do an online warranty replacement. It will tell you if the drive is still under warranty, which it should be if it is only 2 years old.

I just called them and they were pretty helpful.

One thing I forgot to ask is that if they will send me a new HD or a used one. Does anyone know?

Depends on what they have sitting around. You could get either.

Any WD drive from 2 years ago has a 3 year warranty.
