Will we ever see another band as prolific and popular as The Beatles? They appealed to nearly everyone: young, old, male, female.

One day it'll happen again. History repeats like that.

The Beatles rode a wave of musical revolution and happened to be the best at what they did. Music from that era is 10x better than music from this one. I blame the drugs. Today's artists are using the wrong ones or the wrong quantities or something.

I don't think Pink Floyd is even in the same ball park.

Just my opinion though.

I think Pink Floyd was more creative than the Beatles. Also Pink Floyd can actually play live.

But you just proved that the Beatles were better; they had to stop doing concerts because the fans' screaming drowned out the music.

No it isn't. While I never got to see the Beatles I did see Paul MCartney and wings play some Beatles songs and they were great. Now if Wings sounded great you have to know the Beatles sounded great as Harrison was a better Guitarist than the guy for Wings and you also have Lennon on vocals along with Paul plus Ringo was an adequate drummer. Also in their movie "Let it Be" they played live from a roof top and they sounded great.

I think that Led Zeppelin was probably the closest thing to "As Big As The Beatles" that you are going to get. Face it, there are basically two, maybe three bands that musicians nowadays still draw their influence from: The Beatles, Led Zep and maybe the Stones. Quite frankly, you cannot find any two bands that are forty years old and have their music sound as good today as it did then, and stilll have profound influence lke they do today. Especially Led Zep. Its amazing that musicians are drawn to their music like it was made yesterday(no pun intended)

I personally think Led Zeppelin is as good, if not better than the Beatles. I am 40, so I can relate a good bit to that music when it was still pretty fresh. Not brand new, but still being played a good bit on radio.

Peace

the beatles still get about 78,000,000 hits on google (some might be for the bugs)
that's impresive.
I grew up listening to the beatles ( i am not that old, but my father was a beatles fan) I enjoy their later stuff, not the top 40 crap.

No matter what you think of them; they are legends, right up their with Elvis. People will listen to them long after we are dead.

I can do the same thing.. watch this:

Pink Floyd's music all sucked. That's a well known fact.

Just becuase you type it, it doesn't make it true.

Get your "facts" straight before you start trying to debate about it.

Well I'm going to chime in and just post these statistics,I'll let you animals fight over who you think is the best.

Hmmm, this is interesting

Apparently the US has different tastes than the rest of the planet

This is insightful

As for me,I like the Beetles for one reason and one reason only, they wrote good music that still stands the test of time.
Remember that up until then,Rock&Roll was stagnated as far as originality and creativity went,it had a nice little jump start then all the bands starting sounding the same (excpet for the Kinks,You really got me and All day and all of the night).

Right at this time (1963,1964) there was a revolution starting to occur amongst the young generation, there was a huge rift between the adult and teenage generation (I'm not talking about hippies here, just your average middle class family),the Beetles signified this gap with there outragious hair styles,John's ability to enrage the adult generation 🙂 and the bands lack of apparent morals which today seem timid 🙂

I lived throught hese times,it is very difficult to convey in words the absolute histeria and the effect the Beetles had on young people back then,it changed the culture and the way we thought about morals, rules and the way we relate to each other in society.

So don't judge the Beetles just by their music, but also by the impact it had on the culture and society throughout the world.

Today's music industry does not promote creativity. The Beatles innovated pop music by fusing many existing forms of music into pop/rock. Some of the chord progressions they used were never before used in pop/rock.

Today innovating involves having some sh*tty rapper say, "yeah--uh-huh--yeah" over your chorus

Until a brand new form of music comes out with the gravity of Rock & Roll there will not be another Beatles.

So if we're basing who's better on how many albums were sold, judging from your first link Britney Spears must be better than all but only a few bands.

With today's music industry? No.

This is true. Music today is about marketing and making money. All the music out there that COULD be as good as the Beatles will never be heard because it's either not marketable, or some stuffed shirt at BMG or SONY doesn't think the singer looks attractive enough.

Amen. Too bad I've never been to a live concert of Pink Floyd

I saw them in 1994. Excellent show.

That would be a David Gilmour concert.

I'm going to get flamed for this...

But, Garth Brooks has had almost as many number one hits as the beatles have, and I believe he is closing in on them in total album sales.

I don't know enough about music to make a serious claim, but doesn't U2 have pretty good appeal range?

And sometimes I wonder how Michael Jackson would have done if he wasn't plagued by all the craziness (skin change problems, surgery, child molestation charges, etc)

I'm so sick of self-hating people who think everything was pure and great and untouched by greed "back then" and how "everything sucks now" because "it's all about marketting and money". What a load of crap.

It was all about marketting and money back then too. And there were far fewer artists who could sell out huge arenas every single night like there are now. There is an outrageous amount of creativity in music these days, and it is marketted just fine. Do you really think that something like Matisyahu would have survived back then? Hell no.

There may not ever be another band like the beatles in popularity because there's too much choice now, too much creativity for all of the eggs to be in one basket.

The beatles sucked live? That's news to me. Pink Floyd? Good Live? Is that a joke? Or do you mean good in the same way that pot brownies are good?

Will there ever be another band as skilled and prolific? No.

Will there ever be another band as great? There are been some and there will be more.

Where are you getting this magical 27 #1 hits? The official billboard chart number is 20 #1's in the US.

And how do you define great? Mariah Carey has had 17 #1 hits in the past 16 years (and is the only artist alive today that has a chance of beating them out), has sold well in excess of 100 million albums worldwide, plus she writes and produces everything she puts out.

Most don't consider her as large of a force as the Beatles, and rightfully so, but she's one of the select artists who is still alive that can breat their records. Modern day R&B and Pop has greatly been influenced by her music.

IMO the Beatles are the best EVER.Oasis has similar musical roots that can stem back to the Beatles...also I believe they are heavily influenced by the Beatles too.

I think they were heavily influenced by Booze and Cocaine:laugh:

There has been no music artist or band who has surpassed or equaled the greatness of Michael Jackson. Now his personal behavior is very questionable, :Q, but his musical accomplishments are second to none. It really depends on how you define great? There has been some great bands, I think LED is tops over all, but you need to define what you consider great. As far as popularity is concerned even Elvis Presley went beyond the Beatles, and Pink Floyd as far as popularity is concerned, while not quite as long lasting, at one time they were in that Beatle type zone. I think it depends on how you judge it.
