Will we be seeing socket 754 mobo's with PCI Express???

I've got an A64 3000 and an asus mobo that doesn't support locking the bus. I'm also running my old Ti4200 video card on it. It's an ok system but I want to upgrade the video card.

Here's the thing, I don't want to get a new card and then end up a few months from now drooling over a new PCIexpress mobo that I can move my cpu and ram to and then be stuck wishing I had waited to buy a new graphics card.

So are they going to make socket 754 mobo's with PCI express? If so then I'll just wait and buy a new mobo and graphics card at the same time.

If the mobo makers are going to make them then are there any details out yet? Any timeframe?

As far as i know nothing has been anounced but since amd plans on keeping 754 around for a while (semprons) it is possible.

Assuming Sempron stays on 754 (it will) I'm sure you'll see PCIe on 754.

Once again the reminder: AMD64 architecture chipsets do NOT depend on the type of CPU socket used. In AMD64, the "chipset" is just an I/O branch - the system core logic is in the CPUs and between the CPUs. Not being the system core anymore, the chipset is entirely ignorant about which kind of CPU is there and how many of them are present.

That said, as soon as any one of AMD, Broadcom, PLXtech, NVidia, SiS, ALi or VIA (yes, we got seven chipset component making companies on the platform!) get off their arses making a HyperTransport-PCIE tunnel chip, we'll have them across the entire platform. SiS have been shipping their PCI-E enabled south bridge for a few weeks, but that's only two 1x links.

Peter, I think they're aluding to the fact that since AMD is pushing the 939pin chips, will we see much enhancement with the 754pin boards?

I think we will see some boards with PCI-Ex using the 754pin A64, but you are probably going to be limited to slower A64 cpus since I do not think they will have much faster A64 chips on the 754pin socket now, unless you go with a Sempron, which is going to be your "budget" line cpu. We've pretty much seen some of the fastest Newcastle and certainly Clawhammer cores on the 754pin socket now.

By the time they get the bugs out of the PCI-Ex, DDR2, and the speeds start to increase, you will not want a 754pin cpu and board as an enthusiast, you will be going with the 939pin cpu and board, buit it will make a very nice setup for someone wanting a more affordable machine, for a "complete" upgrade.

Hehe I just don't think it will be me at that time.

well it depends on what you mean by "enhancements". like peter said the chipset doesnt care what cpu is being used so it depends on AMD to put out better 754 chips and with .9nm chips being released soon there WILL be preformance increases for 754.

754 boards with pci-e will NOT be limited to slower cpus, again thats all amd's court, they need to release better(see .9nm) socket 754 cpus. remember Mobile A64s will not be switching to socket 939, so there is much life in socket 754 still, and iirc 90nanometer chips are first being released for opterons and mobiles.

by the time AMD supports DDR2 the sockets will change.
