Will Vista drivers work for W7?

I'm ready to load W7_64 on my Abit IP35 Pro; however Abit has no W7 drivers for this board. Can I use Vista drivers?

You'll find that pretty much any driver you will need is native to Win 7.

And yes Vista drivers for things like cameras, sound cards, etc. work.

Thanks very much guys; that's great news. I know that Windows has gotten better and better thru the years in respect to native driver support. I just really didn't want to go thru the trouble of imaging my PC, loading W7 only to find that I needed drivers that didn't exist. I'm sure you understand. 🙂

I'm off to the races!

Yeah I'm pretty damn impressed with 7 thus far. I just bought a new laptop (dell e6400) and the first thing I did when I got it (yesterday) was drop in a larger 7200rpm hard drive and make a 50gb partition for 7. I was planning on dual booting with either xp sp3 or vista buisness (the two OSes that it came with); however, I'm thinking of just running 7 on it now... it's pretty damn snappy! Everything was set up out of the box pretty much (I don't have a finger print scanner though).

My soundcards didn't have Win7 drivers, and when I tried to install the Vista drivers the soundcard installer would not let me proceed. Windows popped up an option to install in Vista compatibility mode, I did that and the soundcard installer worked fine. Both cards function perfectly fine.

All other drivers I have were either installed natively or were Win7 specific.

Yeah, I'm really liking this version of windows so far. Seems like it was made for my hardware and runs rather nicely. I'm going to buy it as soon as it comes out.

That pretty much sums up my feelings so far too. 🙂 It's as fast as my XP install; though it uses more memory...but that's OK as I expected that. BUT it's not a memory hog.

Build 7100, 64-bit had drivers for all onboard devices on my Abit IP35-Pro. It even had the LATEST ATI driver for the HD2600XT GPU I have in the system. It did download a 8MB update to the driver...no idea what it changed though. Bottom line: Driver support is approximately 95% built-in for pretty much everything. Even the old-as-dirt IEEE 1394 (Firewire) controller has a new driver (2006 as opposed to the 2001 driver XP uses).

This would've been a deal-breaker! I got Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.2000 to work with it just fine; this was a BIG sticking point with me. I like SEP; it has worked extremely well for me for more than a year...and I get it free thru work. 😎

Windows update found updated drivers for a few different devices AND found drivers for my Hauppage video capture/tuner card. I couldn't find them on their site but Microsoft seemed to have them. NICE.

I tried the RC of Vista (yeah, I know that it was pre-SP1) and hated it. But W7? This seems to be my next OS. 64-bit version, of course!! So far so good. I'll game with it tomorrow...albiet at low res. I just want to see if games run well.

some of my mobo drivers won't let me install, but everything seems supported, so no big deal i guess.
my razer mouse drivers don't seem 100% compatible. can't get the on-the-fly thing to work. can't adjust mouse sensitivity in-game now. that alone will probably make me switch back to vista since i like to game.
starcraft cinematic's colors are also buggy, but fortunately, in-game colors are ok.

LostPassword: Have you checked your mouse's manuf's page for W7 drivers? MS has beta drivers up for W7. However, I haven't checked to see if they work for my KB/MS yet. I'm using an old, wired KB/MS for my W7 test box. B/T the beta drivers and new 64-bit Vista drivers, I'm sure they'll work though.

So far, my W7 experience has been very positive.

Now that almost everybody has 64bit drivers it's all good. When Vista came out, there were no drivers for it and since Vista drivers work just fine as well, people are saying that W7 is much better than Vista when it wasn't Microsoft's fault that manufacturers didn't have Vista drivers when it came out.

i checked, they don't have any. for the most part the drivers work, just not the on-the-fly feature. but razer is a popular company, i'm sure they'll have some new drivers out eventually.
